Delhi’s Public Works Department has announced plans to introduce 200 truck-mounted anti-smog guns aimed at addressing dust pollution throughout the national capital during the winter months. This decision was revealed by officials on Wednesday, reflecting a proactive approach to combatting air quality issues. The anti-smog guns will also be utilised at construction sites and other significant locations as part of a broader strategy to mitigate air pollution. The implementation of this plan follows a directive from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, calling for enhanced monitoring ahead of the winter season.

According to departmental officials, there will be a special undertaking focused on deep cleaning and dust management across a vast network of approximately 1,400 kilometres of roads. This comprehensive initiative indicates the government’s commitment to improving air quality in the region.

Specifications and Technical Features

The anti-smog guns will be equipped with water tanks that possess a minimum capacity of 7,000 litres and will feature cameras mounted at both the front and rear. The equipment will include a driver, an operator, and a helper, all provided by the chosen contractor. The tender for this project has already been issued, outlining the necessary specifications and requirements for the anti-smog guns.

As per the tender notice, the guns must demonstrate a minimum throw power of 50 metres horizontally, with the capability of rotating 330 degrees in the horizontal plane and tilting 60 degrees vertically. It is also specified that the water droplets produced should range between 10 to 30 microns in size. The machines will be available for hire on an hourly basis and will contain 24 stainless steel nozzles designed for atomising water. These anti-smog guns function by spraying atomised water to settle dust, thus effectively reducing airborne pollutants.

Each unit is capable of projecting water up to a height of 50 metres, specifically targeting dust particles and PM 2.5 contamination in the air. This functionality forms a crucial part of the dust-control strategy outlined by the government.

Execution and Oversight Measures

Under the newly established plan, the two hundred anti-smog guns are expected to facilitate the deep cleaning of at least 200 metres of road each day. This encompassing operation will include activities such as dust removal from the road surfaces, cleaning of kerb channels, ensuring the removal of debris, and effective coordination with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. This multifaceted approach aims to enhance the cleaning process and maintain air quality standards.

During a recent high-level meeting, Chief Minister Gupta underscored the importance of adhering to set targets, warning that strict measures will be implemented against officers who do not fulfil their responsibilities. Furthermore, she emphasized the necessity for dust-control measures to persist beyond the winter months, advocating for ongoing efforts even in the summer season.
