Say Goodbye to Old PIN Codes: India Post Rolls Out DIGIPIN for Accurate Location Mapping

India Post has launched a groundbreaking digital addressing system called DIGIPIN, aiming to revolutionise how addresses are identified and used across the country. This new system is designed to offer pinpoint accuracy, making it easier for citizens, businesses, and government agencies to locate and service any property, even in the remotest parts of India.

DIGIPIN, which stands for Digital Postal Index Number, is a 10-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies a 4-metre by 4-metre grid anywhere in India. Unlike the traditional six-digit PIN code system, which covers large areas and sometimes leads to confusion or delivery errors, DIGIPIN provides a precise digital address based on exact latitude and longitude coordinates. This system has been developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO, reflecting the government’s push for advanced geospatial technology in public services.

The launch of DIGIPIN comes alongside the unveiling of two digital platforms: ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’. Through the ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ web portal, users can generate their unique DIGIPIN by simply locating their home or property on an interactive map. This code can then be shared with delivery agents, emergency services, or e-commerce platforms to ensure accurate and speedy deliveries.

How DIGIPIN Works and Its Benefits

DIGIPIN is a key part of the government’s vision under the National Geospatial Policy 2022, which aims to strengthen India’s digital public infrastructure. The system is open-source, allowing developers, state governments, and private organisations to integrate DIGIPIN into their own applications and workflows. This open approach is expected to foster innovation and ensure that the benefits of precise digital addressing reach all corners of the country.

The Department of Posts describes DIGIPIN as “Address-as-a-Service” (AaaS), enabling secure, consent-based, and seamless sharing of address information between users, government departments, and private companies. This is expected to improve not only postal deliveries but also emergency response, logistics, financial inclusion, and governance. For rural and underserved areas, where formal addresses may be lacking or ambiguous, DIGIPIN promises to bridge the gap and make every citizen digitally locatable and serviceable.

The traditional PIN code system, which has been the backbone of India’s postal network since 1972, is also being modernised. India Post has conducted a nationwide geofencing exercise to map and digitise over 1.5 lakh PIN code boundaries. The ‘Know Your PIN Code’ portal now allows users to identify their exact PIN code based on their real-time location, helping to further refine postal accuracy.

The technical documentation and source code for DIGIPIN have been made publicly available, encouraging feedback and continuous improvement from citizens, developers, and institutions. The Department of Posts has invited active participation to ensure that the digital address ecosystem remains accurate, inclusive, and responsive to local needs.

With DIGIPIN, India Post is not just modernising the postal system but laying the foundation for a future where every Indian address is just a click away, bringing the country closer to the vision of Digital India and efficient, citizen-centric governance.

For those interested in generating their own DIGIPIN, the service is accessible via the official portal at https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home.
