The CSR Journal Magazine

On September 6, 2026, the Satara Runners Foundation achieved a Guinness World Record by hosting the largest number of participants in a single mountain run. A total of 7,839 runners took part in the event, establishing a new benchmark for this category. This milestone was part of the 15th edition of the Punit Balan Group Satara Hill Half Marathon, which showcased the growing interest in endurance sports in the region.

The record-breaking event surpassed the previous achievement of 4,801 runners that was set in 2017. Notably, the first time the foundation captured this title was on September 6, 2015, with 2,618 participants. Over the years, the foundation has consistently raised the bar, reflecting its commitment to fostering a vibrant running community.

The marathon covered a challenging 21.0975 km hill course, with an elevation gain of 434 metres. The highest point of the route is over 1,000 metres above sea level, offering a demanding experience for all participants. The event’s theme, #PaceForPeace, aimed to bring together runners from diverse backgrounds and promote a culture of health and fitness.

Significance of the Achievement

Upendra Pandit, President of the Satara Runners Foundation, expressed the importance of the achievement, stating that achieving the record on the exact date from 2015 adds a special significance to this milestone. He credited the accomplishment to the dedication of the runners, volunteers, and the supportive community in Satara. “The number 7,839 belongs to everyone who participated and to those who helped make it possible,” he remarked.

Race Director Dr Avinash Shinde shared that meticulous planning was essential for orchestrating an event of this scale. The complexity involved in logistics, safety, medical services, and participant verification was detailed and required months of preparation. The successful culmination of these efforts was evident as the large number of eligible runners contributed to the record-setting achievement.

Secretary of the foundation, Shailesh Dhawalikar, highlighted the journey of steadily increasing participation since 2015, noting how each edition of the marathon has built upon the success of the previous one. He emphasised the collective strength of the participants and volunteers that has driven their achievements over the years.

Community and Partner Involvement

The event was supported by a range of officials and partners, including Shri Santosh Patil, Collector and District Magistrate of Satara, and several police and administrative representatives. Their presence underlined the collaborative effort required to host such a significant gathering. Members of the Satara Runners Foundation, volunteers, and local businesses also contributed to the success of the marathon.

Punit Balan, Director of the Punit Balan Group, indicated that this achievement positions Satara’s running community on a global platform once again, reflecting the efforts made throughout the 15 editions of the marathon. The partnership with TechnoSport was also mentioned as a point of pride, with the representatives expressing their commitment to promoting active lifestyles.

As the 2026 edition concluded, the sense of accomplishment resonated strongly within the community. The foundation aims to continue building on this record and fostering the running culture in Satara. The event has not only marked a historic achievement but has also inspired many to participate in future running events.
