Sam Altman Hails India As Global AI Leader, Says New Jobs Will Emerge

The CSR Journal Magazine

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has praised India’s rapid rise as a global hub for artificial intelligence adoption, saying the country is not merely participating in the AI revolution but helping lead it. Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Altman highlighted India’s dynamic technology ecosystem and strong uptake of AI tools across sectors, positioning the country as a major driver of future innovation.

India’s Role As A Global AI Leader

Altman said India’s scale, talent pool and digital infrastructure make it uniquely positioned to shape how artificial intelligence is deployed worldwide. He noted that AI adoption in India is progressing at an extraordinary pace, supported by a large base of developers, startups and students using AI tools for education, business and research.

The OpenAI chief described the country’s progress as globally influential, emphasising that India is setting trends rather than simply following them. He added that the innovations emerging from India could play a decisive role in defining how AI benefits large populations, especially in emerging economies.

AI Will Transform Jobs, Not Eliminate Them

Addressing widespread concerns about automation, Altman acknowledged that AI will inevitably disrupt existing roles but argued that history shows technological change ultimately creates new forms of employment. He expressed confidence that societies will adapt, with new occupations emerging that are more productive and meaningful.

“AI will definitely impact the job market, but we always find new things to do,” Altman said, suggesting that human creativity and evolving economic needs will generate fresh opportunities. He stressed that the challenge lies in preparing the workforce for transition rather than resisting technological change.

OpenAI Expands Commitment To India

India has become OpenAI’s second-largest user base globally, prompting the company to deepen its presence in the country. The firm opened its first office in New Delhi last year, signalling a long-term commitment to the market.

On the sidelines of the summit, OpenAI also announced a strategic partnership with the Tata Group and Tata Consultancy Services to accelerate AI-driven innovation across enterprise, consumer and social sectors. The collaboration aims to combine OpenAI’s advanced agentic AI capabilities with TCS’s industry expertise to build sector-specific solutions at scale.

TCS is expected to deploy and integrate OpenAI technologies for global clients, potentially accelerating AI transformation across industries ranging from manufacturing to healthcare. Altman said he was eager to see how India’s growing AI ecosystem would evolve, describing the country as one of the most exciting places in the world for technological development.
