The Sagar hooch tragedy has reportedly resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals due to the consumption of allegedly spurious alcohol in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district. According to Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal, those receiving medical care are showing signs of improvement. Authorities are actively engaging with the community to promote awareness about the dangers of toxic liquor.

Collector Pal noted that ongoing discussions with locals and the implementation of awareness programmes aim to prevent further harm. She emphasised that the condition of all hospitalised patients is steadily enhancing, highlighting the need for vigilance regarding alcoholic beverages consumed in the area.

Medical Response to the Incident

In response to the crisis, healthcare professionals have been conducting screenings and monitoring the well-being of individuals in the affected villages. An effective treatment strategy identified is the use of fomepizole, an antidote for suspected cases of toxic alcohol poisoning. This medical intervention has reportedly saved over 30 lives, proving vital for many patients.

Fomepizole is specifically utilised in instances of methanol poisoning, as it helps inhibit the production of harmful metabolites. Its prompt administration is crucial when toxicity from alcohol is suspected, indicating the importance of timely medical response in such situations.

The local healthcare system continues to provide support to approximately 40 individuals receiving treatment in hospitals, some of whom remain in critical condition. Community health efforts have intensified to ensure that anyone exhibiting symptoms seeks immediate medical attention.

Police Action and Ongoing Investigation

In parallel to medical responses, law enforcement has ramped up its efforts against those allegedly involved in distributing toxic liquor. Sagar Superintendent of Police Anurag Sujania confirmed that 16 individuals out of 30 accused have been arrested and are currently in custody, with efforts focused on apprehending the remaining suspects.

The tragic incident has sparked a broader investigation into the unlawful liquor supply chain within the region. Police are tracing the sources and distribution networks related to the spurious liquor consumed by the victims. Authorities previously indicated possible connections to illegal liquor operations spanning the Madhya Pradesh-Uttar Pradesh border.

As the investigation unfolds, Sagar authorities are maintaining surveillance in the affected regions. They continue to urge residents who may have ingested suspected spurious liquor and are experiencing adverse symptoms to seek medical assistance without delay. The district administration has thus far confirmed the death toll remains at 15.
