Russia Commits to Increasing International Students to Half a Million by 2030

The Russian ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, announced that Russia is dedicated to raising the number of international students studying in the country to half a million by the year 2030. This statement was made during his address at the Indo-Russian Education Summit 2026 held on May 28 in New Delhi. Alipov outlined the strengths of Russia’s education system, focusing on its blend of esteemed academic institutions, high academic requirements, and relevant practical training.

He mentioned that Russia currently accommodates approximately 300,000 international students, including nearly 40,000 from India. Alipov expressed enthusiasm about the growth in academic exchanges and joint research initiatives between the two nations, stating that such collaboration creates new avenues for students and scholars and aids in tackling global challenges.

Partnerships and Collaborative Efforts

Ambassador Alipov further spoke about the dynamic partnerships developing between universities across Russia and India in fields such as engineering, medicine, economics, and advanced technologies. He emphasised the importance of institutional cooperation and acknowledged the efforts of the Haryana and Rajasthan governments to promote educational ties with Russia.

Among notable collaborations highlighted, Alipov referred to the partnership between Dr. Ambedkar University in Agra and MGIMO University, which features student exchanges and various academic collaborations. He also mentioned the cooperation between Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University and several Indian institutions, including IIT Bombay and the University of Delhi, in areas of medical education and research.

Additionally, Kazan Federal University has introduced English-language medical programmes and academic mobility initiatives under the Indian ITEC and GIAN schemes. The ambassador expressed appreciation for these initiatives, indicating a shared commitment to educational cooperation.

Russian Language Centres and the Summit’s Goals

Alipov noted the establishment of Russian language centres in several regions of India, which aims to promote cultural and educational exchange. In the academic year of 2025-26, new centres were inaugurated in Trivandrum, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad, demonstrating a growing interest in Russian language programs across the country.

The Indo-Russian Education Summit 2026, ongoing from May 28 to 29 at Le Meridien in Connaught Place, aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in higher education. This summit brings together a diverse group of policymakers, academicians, and institutional leaders from both countries to discuss and expand educational opportunities and scholarly interactions.
