Relief operations in Nepal have gained momentum with more than 40 private helicopter charter flights carrying much-needed supplies to areas affected by recent floods. These flights commenced from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on Thursday, as coordinated efforts by authorities seek to address the crisis.

The Nepal Army is overseeing the operation of these flights, which are critical in delivering aid to regions devastated by flash floods. The ongoing rescue and relief work aims to assist the populations suffering the impacts of this disaster.

According to reports from the Kathmandu Airport Office, by 2 pm on Thursday, over 40 flights had already been completed, with an additional 20 helicopters remaining ready for deployment. This heightened response indicates the urgency surrounding the relief efforts following the severe flooding.

Widespread Devastation and Casualties

The floods have resulted in extensive damage across three districts, prompting Nepal Police to report an increase in the death toll, which currently stands at 270 following the recovery of 93 more bodies. The situation escalated after the floods struck areas along the Bhotekoshi River on Wednesday, marking one of the most severe disasters in recent years.

In efforts to manage the situation, authorities are also racing against time to locate thousands of individuals who remain unaccounted for since the calamity. Rescue operations are being prioritised to ensure the safety of those affected by the floods.

In conjunction with aerial efforts, personnel from the Armed Police Force and local residents have been mobilised to clear obstructed roads. This initiative aims to restore transportation routes for continued assistance and access to those in need.

Government Oversight and Local Involvement

Prime Minister Balendra Shah conducted a visit to Bidur Municipality in Nuwakot district on Thursday to review the extent of damage caused by the floods. Accompanied by Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamshal, the team travelled from Kathmandu to one of the most severely impacted locations.

During his visit, Shah demonstrated a commitment to actively oversee the ongoing rescue and relief initiatives. The Prime Minister’s office confirmed that this visit was part of broader efforts to address the devastation brought about by the floods.

In addition to the aerial and ground operations, the Nepal Army has been consistently deploying helicopters to assist in both the rescue and transportation of relief materials. The coordination of these various efforts underscores the collaborative approach taken by authorities and local communities in responding to this crisis.
