Cochin International Airport to Install Bridge-Mounted Equipment for Aircraft Power Supply

The CSR Journal Magazine

Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is set to implement Bridge-Mounted Equipment (BME) to cater to the electrical needs of parked aircraft, with a project budget of Rs 15.04 crore. This development marks another advance towards sustainable airport operations. The facility’s inauguration is scheduled for September 24, led by Keralam Chief Minister and CIAL Chairman V. D. Satheesan.

The BME project will feature ten bridge-mounted 90 kVA Ground Power Units (GPUs) and ten bridge-mounted 90 TR Pre-Conditioned Air (PCA) units, alongside one mobile GPU and one mobile PCA unit. This setup aims to deliver crucial electrical power and conditioned air directly from the airport’s infrastructure to the parked aircraft.

Importance of the BME System

During their time on the ground, aircraft typically rely on electrical power and conditioned air to support essential onboard systems and maintain passenger comfort. Traditionally, these needs are fulfilled through the aircraft’s Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) or by using ground-based diesel-powered generators, which results in fuel consumption and environmental emissions.

The implementation of the BME system allows aircraft stationed at aerobridges to draw power and air directly from the airport’s network. This innovation is expected to significantly reduce reliance on APUs and traditional diesel-powered equipment, contributing to decreased carbon emissions. Reports indicate that the system could prevent an estimated 122 to 145 kg of carbon dioxide emissions for every hour of operation.

Furthermore, the BME initiative promises to diminish noise pollution, fostering a cleaner and safer environment around the airport apron. This strategic move is part of CIAL’s ongoing mission to adopt cleaner and more efficient technologies within its operational framework.

CIAL’s Financial Performance

Cochin International Airport Limited has recently reported a historic financial milestone, achieving a net profit of Rs 502 crore for the financial year 2025-26. This figure represents an important landmark, as it surpasses the Rs 500 crore benchmark for the first time. The announcement was made on August 9 by Keralam Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan.

During the same financial year, CIAL recorded total revenues amounting to Rs 1,220 crore. The board has further recommended a 55 per cent dividend for its shareholders, reflecting strong financial performance and shareholder value.

Chief Minister Satheesan expressed pride in the accomplishment, underscoring the significance of this achievement for Keralam. He extended his congratulations to the management, employees, and shareholders of CIAL, highlighting their collective efforts that led to this success.
