Denmark’s government announced on Saturday that it is cautiously optimistic regarding US President Donald Trump’s recent declaration of a deal concerning Greenland. This agreement aims to bolster the American military presence on the island while ensuring that it remains under Danish control. The announcement follows months of escalating tensions, during which President Trump had suggested taking over the semi-autonomous territory.

Top leaders in Greenland have also welcomed the agreement, describing it as an important development that has been awaited for some time. Reports indicate that a formal signing of the deal is scheduled for next week during the United Nations General Assembly. However, the agreement must still be approved by the parliaments of both Denmark and Greenland before it can come into effect.

President Trump stated that the agreement would provide the United States with “permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland,” thus addressing various US concerns. He emphasised that the US would “immediately” start the process of enhancing its military presence on the mineral-rich territory.

Details of the Agreement and Existing Arrangements

Despite the new agreement, it remains uncertain how it will differ from the existing security framework between Denmark and the US. Historically, the two nations have maintained a long-standing arrangement that permits the deployment of American forces in Greenland. Following Trump’s announcement, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen confirmed that the agreement would be signed next week, stating it could benefit both Greenland and Denmark.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed hope that the upcoming agreement would resolve a period of uncertainty, enhancing security in the Arctic and fostering a cooperative relationship within NATO and Europe while respecting the Kingdom’s core interests. Leaders from Greenland, including Jens-Frederik Nielsen, conveyed their satisfaction, believing the deal would improve collective security and aid in the country’s continued development.

Greenland’s Foreign Minister Mette B Egede acknowledged the effort behind the negotiations, stating that the time taken was worthwhile and that an agreement is nearly finalised. The new deal reportedly also bans any non-NATO military base in Greenland and prevents adversarial investments, ensuring that nations such as China and Russia cannot establish a presence on the island.

Historically, the US had multiple bases and installations in Greenland during the Cold War, although its military presence has since declined. Currently, the US operates the remote Pituffik Space Base, which was established following the Defence of Greenland Treaty signed in 1951. This base supports vital military operations related to missile warning, defence, and space surveillance for the US and NATO.

The agreement appears to represent a significant political achievement for President Trump as the US midterm elections approach. Earlier, he had suggested that Denmark sells Greenland to the US, deeming the island essential for American security. Despite Denmark’s status as a NATO ally, Trump did not dismiss the possibility of using military force to secure the territory, a notion that was rejected by the Danish and Greenlandic governments, who maintained that the island was not for sale.

The proposal also faced significant opposition from Russia and parts of Europe regarding the US’s interests in Greenland. Activist Orla Joelsen remarked that the new agreement reinforces Denmark’s sovereignty and the self-determination rights of the Greenlandic people.
