Recruitment rules changed for BSF Assistant Commandant (Official Language), upper age limit raised to 60

The recruitment rules for officers in the special division of the Border Security Force (BSF) have been changed. Under the new rules, officers can now serve as Assistant Commandants (Official Language) until the age of 60. Additionally, those appointed to this position must have at least three years of prior experience as a translator or teacher in either Hindi or English.

The Union Home Ministry has announced in a statement that the previous recruitment rules, implemented in 2017, allowed officers to serve in this position only until the age of 57. The amended rules are titled Border Security Force, Assistant Commandant (Official Language) Group ‘A’ Combatised Post Recruitment (Amendment) Rules, 2026. These rules have now been amended. The new rules came into effect on February 3, 2026.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by clauses (b) and (c) of sub-section (2) of section 141 of the Border Security Force Act, 1968 (47 of 1968), the Central Government hereby makes the following rules further to amend the Border Security Force, Assistant Commandant (Official Language) Group ‘A’ Combatised post Recruitment Rules, 2015 in the Border Security Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs,” the MHA’s official notification said.

BSF Assistant Commandants (Official Language) promote Hindi and implement the government’s Rajbhasha policy within the Border Security Force. Their key responsibilities include translating documents and materials, promoting Hindi in official work, ensuring compliance with language policies and facilitating communication in Hindi. They play a crucial role in administrative and language-related tasks, supporting the BSF’s operations.

Deputation period also extended for this Group A position of the BSF

The ministry further stated that the deputation period for this Group A position has also been extended. Government officers can now serve as Assistant Commandants (Official Language) on deputation until the age of 56. Those appointed will receive a monthly salary according to the Seventh Pay Commission’s Level 8 to 9 pay scale.

Applicants must be holding an analogous post on a regular basis or have the required years of regular service in Level-9 (Rs 53,100–1,67,800) or Level-8 (Rs 47,600–1,51,100) of the pay matrix.

Assistant Commandants are responsible for translating important documents of the BSF’s administrative department into the official language. The rules have been amended with the aim of ensuring that experienced and skilled officers can provide their services in this position for a longer period.

This role focuses on implementing the government’s Rajbhasha policy, translating documents, and promoting Hindi in official work. Eligibility criteria include a Master’s degree in Hindi or English, or a degree with Hindi and English as compulsory subjects, and at least three years of experience in translation or teaching.
