RCF Kapurthala Completes First 16-Car Vande Bharat Rake for Oscillation Trials

The Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala has successfully manufactured its inaugural 16-car Vande Bharat Chair Car rake, marking an important milestone in India’s semi-high-speed train production. This achievement was finalised on March 31, 2025, as the facility positions itself among the key producers of these advanced trainsets.

This latest model features an upgraded propulsion system provided by Alstom, showcasing a significant advancement in technology for Indian Railways. It exemplifies the organisation’s dedication to enhancing passenger comfort and adhering to international manufacturing standards.

Innovations in Train Design and Features

The upgraded Vande Bharat rake embodies a leap forward in India’s rail technology capabilities, reflecting efforts under the Make in India initiative. Designed entirely in the country by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, this trainset is the result of a comprehensive development process, including initial concepts, prototyping, and production planning.

Among its numerous features, the Vande Bharat trainset offers ergonomically designed reclining seats that facilitate comfort during travel. Passengers can benefit from generous legroom, large panoramic windows that enhance the viewing experience, and fully air-conditioned coaches to ensure an enjoyable journey regardless of external temperatures.

Additional amenities include automatic sliding doors, bio-vacuum toilets, and a refined suspension system that minimises jerks and vibrations, contributing to a quieter travel experience. Collectively, these aspects are aimed at providing a premium level of safety, comfort, and operational efficiency.

Progress and Future Plans

The journey of the Vande Bharat initiative began in 2018, with two initial trainsets introduced. Since that time, a total of 97 Vande Bharat Chair Car trains have been produced, underscoring the programme’s rapid expansion and success. All these trains have been built at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, emphasising the project’s indigenisation goals.

Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has previously highlighted that railway development transcends political barriers, connecting citizens with essential services. In his addresses, he noted the collective responsibility of all political parties and state governments to support railway projects and facilitate their timely completion, thereby ensuring valuable services for the general populace.

The completion of the first 16-car rake at RCF Kapurthala represents a pivotal moment in India’s railway advancement, contributing to the broader vision of modernising the Indian Railways and improving travel standards for citizens. As the rake undergoes oscillation trials, further steps will be taken to enhance operational readiness and ensure safety features meet rigorous standards.
