Raihan Vadra Highlights Delhi Protests with Noir-Style Photography

The CSR Journal Magazine

Raihan Vadra, a visual artist and the nephew of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, is actively documenting the ongoing protests in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. These demonstrations have arisen in response to alleged irregularities in the electoral process and aim to push for his resignation alongside calls for the withdrawal of electoral roll revisions under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

The protests, led by the opposition, have escalated tensions in the capital. Protesters have gathered in significant numbers, challenging the electoral authority while making their voices heard through chants and placards. Vadra’s photographs depict various moments from these events, showcasing the dynamic interactions between demonstrators and police forces.

Among the images, one notably captures Rahul Gandhi amidst the crowd, conveying the intensity of the situation as he joins the protests. This framing highlights his involvement in the political discourse currently dominating Delhi, emphasising the urgency with which the opposition seeks accountability from electoral officials.

Mixed Reactions on Social Media

The release of Raihan Vadra’s photographs has generated a range of responses on social media platforms. Many users have expressed support for the opposition’s objectives, seeing the visual documentation as an important aspect of the ongoing struggle for electoral integrity. The photographs serve as a raw lens through which the public can engage with current political controversies.

Conversely, some critics have claimed that the work presents an imbalanced view, suggesting that the images offer a singular narrative without acknowledging multiple perspectives in the political arena. As a result, comments on Vadra’s posts have been restricted, a measure reportedly taken to mitigate further discourse surrounding the images.

The polarisation evident in online reactions underscores the complexities inherent in political expression, particularly in a highly charged atmosphere such as the current protests in Delhi.

Background of Raihan Vadra

Raihan Vadra is an established visual artist with a strong background in photography and curatorship. Despite his lineage within the influential Nehru-Gandhi family, he has made a conscious choice to remain outside of direct political involvement while pursuing his artistic ambitions. He is the son of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and businessman Robert Vadra, with direct familial ties to Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Educated at The Doon School in Dehradun, Vadra furthered his studies in politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, where he enrolled in 2019. His early fascination with photography was instilled when he received his first camera as a child. However, his artistic journey faced challenges due to a severe cricket injury in 2017, which resulted in partial vision loss.

Despite this setback, Vadra resumed his work in photography, exploring various genres including wildlife, street photography, and mixed-media art installations. His exhibitions, such as ‘Dark Perception’ and ‘Anumana’, have received attention for their innovative approaches to themes of perception and human experience.

In addition to individual projects, Vadra co-founded the art collective exhibition titled ‘You Cannot Miss This’ in late 2024. His engagement to photographer Aviva Baig in late 2025 further cements his connections within the arts community in Delhi.
