‘Pure Evil’: Piers Morgan Identifies the Most Dangerous Individual He Has Interviewed

The CSR Journal Magazine

Renowned broadcaster Piers Morgan has referred to Erin Caffey, a convicted teenage murderer, as “the nearest to pure evil” he has encountered throughout his extensive 35-year career. This assertion emerged from Morgan’s reflections on a prison interview conducted in 2016 that profoundly impacted him. While his career has involved discussions with global leaders and a variety of high-profile figures, Caffey’s case distinctly unsettled him. Morgan made these remarks during an appearance on the television show Lorraine, highlighting his 61st birthday on March 30 as a moment for introspection on his career’s most memorable interviews.

Caffey’s Crimes and Their Background

The case dates back to March 1, 2008, in East Texas, when Caffey was just 16 years old. Investigations revealed that Caffey was motivated to orchestrate her family’s murder after her parents forbade her from seeing her 18-year-old boyfriend, Charlie Wilkinson. Weeks prior to the attack, Caffey devised a plan and enlisted Wilkinson and his friend Charles Waid to execute it. On the night of the crime, she waited outside her family home in Alba with another associate serving as a getaway driver while the two men carried out the attack. Inside, her mother, Penny Caffey, was fatally shot and stabbed, her younger brothers, 13-year-old Matthew and 8-year-old Tyler, were killed, and her father, Terry Caffey, was shot multiple times but survived the assault; he managed to escape despite the house being set ablaze.

Details from Piers Morgan’s Interview with Caffey

The interview, featured in the ITV documentary series Killer Women, was held at the Hilltop Unit, a women’s prison in Gatesville, Texas. Morgan reported that during their conversation, Caffey, who was 24 at the time, discussed the crime with a tone he found unsettling. She expressed feelings of shock and anger, reflecting on her relationship with Wilkinson, her boyfriend. In her own words, she described the crime as senseless, admitting, “When I look back on it now, this was all just stupid. I mean, for what?” Morgan was particularly struck by her appearance of normalcy, which contrasted starkly with the horrific nature of her actions. He noted that his prolonged questioning did not provide a clear rationale for her motivations.

Terry Caffey’s Response and Forgiveness

A notable aspect of this case is the reaction of Terry Caffey, who endured the traumatic experience of surviving the attack. He has publicly asserted his choice to forgive his daughter, whom he views as a victim of manipulation by her boyfriend. Terry Caffey emphasized that he does not perceive Erin as the principal architect behind the crime but rather as a vulnerable young girl influenced by a controlling partner. His compassion has led him to advocate against pursuing the death penalty for the accused. In his words, he sought to allow them the chance to find remorse. Ultimately, Erin Caffey received a life sentence with a minimum of 40 years, while her accomplices, Wilkinson and Waid, also faced life imprisonment.
