Punjab Launches Dedicated Anti-Gangster Police Station With Statewide Powers

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Punjab government has announced the establishment of a dedicated Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) Police Station in Rajpura, Patiala district, to intensify action against organised crime across the state.

The specialised police station will have jurisdiction over the entire state. Officials said the move is aimed at strengthening coordinated operations against gangster networks, which often operate across multiple districts.

Statewide Crackdown On Gang Activity

According to Punjab Police, the new AGTF station will function as a central hub for intelligence gathering, investigation and enforcement against organised criminal groups. The initiative comes amid ongoing efforts by the state to curb gang violence and illegal activities.

Earlier this week, Punjab Police carried out a massive statewide operation under “Operation Prahaar-2,” a 72-hour crackdown targeting criminals. Police teams conducted 2,760 raids at locations linked to wanted suspects. As a result, more than 1,200 individuals were detained on the first day alone.

The operation was launched under the “Gangstran Te Vaar” campaign, which aims to make Punjab free of gangster activity. Senior officers from the police headquarters supervised raids across districts.

Major Drug Network Busted

In a separate development, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police dismantled a cross-border narco-smuggling network. Two operatives were arrested and a large heroin consignment was seized.

Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said police recovered 7.63 kg of heroin along with Rs 21,800 in suspected drug money. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were in contact with a Dubai-based handler using virtual numbers.

Authorities believe the handler coordinated cross-border consignments and directed distribution routes within India. He is also suspected to be linked to several narcotics cases, including one involving the seizure of 43 kg of heroin.

An FIR has been registered at Chheharta police station in Amritsar under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Investigators are now tracing the network’s forward and backward linkages.

Inter-State Links Under Investigation

Law enforcement agencies are also probing connections between various criminal groups operating across state boundaries. In a related case, Shimla Police arrested an alleged inter-state drug trafficking kingpin from Zirakpur in Punjab.

Officials said the accused, known by multiple aliases, is linked to several NDPS cases. His arrest highlights the growing coordination between state police forces to tackle organised crime.

Overall, the establishment of the AGTF Police Station in Rajpura signals a more centralised and aggressive strategy against gangsters and drug syndicates. Authorities say sustained operations and intelligence-driven policing will be key to dismantling these networks across Punjab.
