Prohibitory orders in Jaisalmer village after violence over cenotaph dispute

The CSR Journal Magazine

Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to maintain public order, was imposed in Basanpir village in Jaisalmer on Wednesday over the escalating tension regarding the ‘Chhatri’ or cenotaph.

Chhatri or cenotaph is a dome-shaped pavilion mostly found in Rajasthani and Mughal architecture, built to honor kings, warriors, or notable individuals.

What is the dispute all about

The dispute revolves around the demolition and reconstruction of a Chhatri at the banks of a pond in the village. Earlier, a group had demolished the Chhatri for no specific reason known, and the demand for reconstruction had been raised for a long time. The administration, after carefully understanding the situation, approved the construction, and since then tension has escalated.

Reconstruction of the Chhatri started on July 10. During the reconstruction, another group opposed it, and stone pelting occurred. Many vehicles were vandalised, and even women were involved in the incident. Police were forced to lathicharge.

During this tense situation, 4 people, including a constable, were injured, and over 20 people were arrested, including women.

Political interference

Post the incident, many political leaders started visiting the village and planning meetings. Leaders who have paid visits include MLA Chhotu Singh Bhati, Pokaran MLA Mahant Pratap Puri, Shiv MLA Ravindra Singh Bhati, former MLA Sang Singh Bhati, and other BJP leaders. Sensing the situation could worsen, preventive measures have been taken and Section 163 was imposed.

What restrictions have been imposed

Under Section 163, no one can carry any kind of arms, like pistols, rifles, knives, among others, in public places in Basanpir. More than five people cannot gather, and no rally or procession can be taken out during this time. Under this section, no one can use slogans or audio-visual material that can lead to communal disturbance.
