The CSR Journal Magazine

Priyanka Chopra recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she expressed her enthusiasm about her return to Indian cinema through the much-anticipated film Varanasi. This project, directed by acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli, also features Mahesh Babu in a leading role.

For Chopra, this marks her first Indian movie in approximately six to seven years. During the discussion, she highlighted the significance of this project in her career, describing the experience of working on it as an exciting adventure.

Praise for Director SS Rajamouli

While speaking with Jimmy Fallon, Chopra referred to Rajamouli as “one of India’s most talented directors,” underscoring her admiration for his work. She shared, “I haven’t done an Indian movie in almost like six or seven years.

This movie is called Varanasi, and it is directed by SS Rajamouli, who is one of India’s most amazingly talented directors. It is going to be an adventure, and I am very excited about it. April 27!” This enthusiasm was evident as she discussed the scale and production of the film.

Duration and Scale of Filming

Chopra revealed that the filming of Varanasi has been extensive, lasting for 14 months thus far, with six additional months of shooting still planned. Jimmy Fallon expressed surprise at the lengthy duration dedicated to the film.

Chopra confirmed the large scale of the project, noting that it is being shot in IMAX format. Fallon noted the rumors suggesting the film is epic in nature, to which Chopra added, “Yes, we have shot it in IMAX format, so it is going to be for IMAX theatres. It is going to be great.”

Character and Release Details

Director SS Rajamouli had earlier shared insights regarding Mahesh Babu’s character in the film, named Rudhra, who is depicted riding an ox and wielding a trishul. In Varanasi, Chopra will take on the role of Mandakini, while Mahesh Babu leads as Rudhra. The film is set to be released in April 2027, thereby marking a significant moment in Chopra’s career as she returns to Indian cinema.
