On September 30, 2026, United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order that mandates the federal government to replace the terms “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” with “Super Intelligence” and “SI.” The directive, titled “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence,” aims to implement this change across all executive branch operations.

The order specifies that federal agencies should adhere to this terminology transition to the fullest extent allowed by law. The intention is to foster a clearer understanding of the enhanced capabilities associated with contemporary technological advancements, which reportedly exceed the original definitions set over 70 years ago.

According to the executive order, all departments and agencies are required to use the updated terms in official correspondence, public announcements, digital platforms, reports, and relevant policy documents. However, the new nomenclature will not retroactively impact existing regulations, government contracts, or historical documents.

Rationale Behind the Change

In the executive order, the rationale for the reclassification is articulated, emphasising the expansion of capabilities developed by American innovators. The order states that technology today does not merely replicate or automate human intelligence; it enhances human creativity and problem-solving in various fields such as science and medicine.

The order insists that the language employed by the government must accurately reflect these advancements in capability. To align with this objective, the administration will provisionally utilise the existing legal definition of artificial intelligence as outlined in Title 15 of the United States Code to refer to “Super Intelligence.”

Furthermore, the order imposes a 60-day deadline for the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology (APST) to propose legislative language to Congress, aiming to establish a federal statutory definition of “Super Intelligence.” This initiative also includes recommendations for updating existing laws to incorporate the new terminology.

High-Level Luncheon with Technology Executives

Prior to the signing of the executive order, President Trump hosted a gathering at the White House with prominent technology leaders, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai, and Jensen Huang. During this meeting, Trump framed the advancements in technology as heralding an extraordinary era for humanity.

The President characterised these technological developments as potentially groundbreaking, asserting that they represent one of the largest advancements in history, surpassing even the Internet in its impact. He emphasised the significant growth prospects for the United States in this sector.

Following the luncheon, attendees, including technology executives and officials from the administration, briefed the press about a White House Accord focused on the safe development of Super Intelligence. Zuckerberg underscored the importance of instilling confidence in the technology’s functionality, while other leaders emphasised the necessity of collaborative efforts to ensure safety in technological advancements.

Discussions also included national security dimensions, with Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton asserting that maintaining a leadership role in this field is essential for the nation’s security. The consensus among participants highlighted the intricate relationship between advancements in Super Intelligence and the broader implications for national safety and competitive standing.
