The CSR Journal Magazine

During her address at the ‘Jal Mahotsav 2026’ in New Delhi on March 11, President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the deep connection between water and India’s culture, traditions, and community life. She noted that water is not merely a basic necessity but plays a crucial role in the well-being of citizens. The President pointed to the historical challenges faced by rural populations, particularly women and children, who often trekked long distances to obtain potable water. She stressed that providing access to clean water transcends mere convenience, impacting health, time management, and dignity.

Government Initiatives for Water Access

To tackle ongoing water accessibility issues, the Indian government unveiled the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’, which has significantly improved water provision in rural areas. President Murmu acknowledged the transformation experienced by communities that previously struggled with water scarcity now enjoying clean and safe water at home. She asserted that effective conservation methods stem from a communal sense of responsibility toward resources. Strengthening this ownership is paramount for sustainable management and conservation efforts.

Empowering Communities through Self-Help Groups

President Murmu expressed satisfaction with the involvement of Self-Help Groups in various facets of water management, including testing and maintaining water quality. She emphasized the positive impact these groups have had, particularly in enhancing women’s roles in society. The President firmly believes that empowering women through these initiatives will significantly contribute to ensuring water security across the nation.

Strategies for Sustainable Water Security

In her speech, the President underscored the necessity of coordinated and multifaceted strategies to reinforce water security. She noted ongoing efforts in greywater management in rural settings, facilitated in association with the “Clean India Mission.” Collaborative actions with the Central Groundwater Board and other organizations focus on groundwater recharge and conservation practices. Moreover, initiatives like Catch the Rain and Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari are crucial for promoting rainwater harvesting, playing a vital role in the future security of water resources.

Encouraging a Collective Responsibility for Water Conservation

President Murmu characterized water conservation as a collective responsibility, urging citizens to regard water as a priceless asset for future generations rather than a mere commodity. She called for integrating water conservation into daily life practices and fostering awareness among younger generations. The President expressed optimism that initiatives like the ‘Jal Mahotsav’ will act as a catalyst for a larger movement focused on enhancing water security in India.

Nationwide Campaign for Enhanced Community Ownership

The Ministry of Jal Shakti is overseeing the ‘Jal Mahotsav 2026’, which runs from March 8 to March 22, aiming to bolster community engagement and ownership in rural water service delivery under the Jal Jeevan Mission. This extensive campaign seeks to instill a sense of shared responsibility towards the nation’s water resources while promoting sustainable practices.
