The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his congratulations to Indian athletes and squash players who achieved success at the Asian Games on September 28. His remarks were shared by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) through multiple posts on X, highlighting India’s impressive performance that resulted in seven medals on Day 8 of the event.

The country secured two silver medals in squash, along with five medals in athletics, bringing India’s overall tally to 37 medals—comprising four gold, 16 silver, and 17 bronze. Despite the increase in medals, India dropped from 10th to 12th place in the overall standings.

Among the notable achievements acknowledged by Prime Minister Modi was Anahat Singh’s impressive performance in women’s singles squash, where she won a silver medal, marking her as the first Indian woman to reach an Asian Games squash singles final. She ultimately lost to Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam in a closely contested match.

Highlights from Squash Competitions

The PMO also congratulated Abhay Singh, who secured silver in the men’s singles squash event. Recognised for his skill and determination, Abhay, who ranks 26th in the world, lost his final to Malaysia’s Ng Eain Yow, the world No. 17, in a match that showcased his competitive spirit.

Modi’s message continued to commend the athletes for their hard work and perseverance, emphasising the significance of their accomplishments not only for themselves but for the nation as well. Both Singh and Abhay’s achievements exemplify the growing prowess of Indian squash on an international platform.

As squash brought significant recognition, Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the remarkable feats are a reflection of the potential within Indian sports, encouraging athletes to continue striving for excellence in their respective fields.

Accomplishments in Athletics

In addition to squash, the athletics events contributed significantly to India’s medal tally. Ancy Sojan earned a silver in the women’s long jump, while Sarvesh Kushare ended a five-decade wait for a medal in the men’s high jump, also achieving silver. Modi remarked on the historical nature of Sarvesh’s accomplishment, noting its importance in Indian athletics.

Furthermore, Harita Bhadra made her Asian Games debut by winning bronze in the women’s 200m race. Her performance was characterised by confidence and determination, displaying the spirit expected from competing at such a high level. Modifications in athletics continue to showcase new talents emerging from India.

Parul Chaudhary and Tejaswin Shankar also made their contributions to India’s athletics success. Parul secured a bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, achieving a personal best and setting a new national record in the process. Tejaswin clinched bronze in the men’s decathlon, successfully completing various demanding events. Their performances reflect the depth of talent within Indian athletics.

Overall Performance and Future Prospects

Despite not winning a gold medal on that day, the seven medals represent a significant accomplishment and an increasing presence of Indian athletes on the Asian stage. Prime Minister Modi’s acknowledgment highlights the commitment that these athletes have towards their sport, encouraging future generations to pursue excellence.

The recent performances at the Asian Games underscore the potential for Indian sports as a whole. While the nation currently stands at 12th place, the results indicate a promising trajectory for Indian athletes in upcoming competitions. Prime Minister Modi extended his best wishes for their continual success in future endeavours.

As the games progress, the Indian contingent remains hopeful for more achievements, fostering a collective spirit of sportsmanship and dedication that aims to inspire all aspiring athletes in the country.
