The CSR Journal Magazine

The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will officially come into effect on October 20, 2026. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that this agreement will grant duty-free access to all Indian exports heading to New Zealand, thereby enhancing trade, investment, and technological collaboration between the two nations. The FTA was signed by Goyal and New Zealand’s Minister for Trade and Investment, Todd McClay, in New Delhi on April 27, 2026.

This agreement is anticipated to create new opportunities for Indian exporters, farmers, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and workers across various sectors. Goyal emphasised that the pact aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving a developed India by 2047, aiming to foster a more profound economic partnership between India and New Zealand.

Zero-Duty Access for Indian Exports

Under the terms of the FTA, all goods exported from India to New Zealand will benefit from zero-duty access starting from October 20, 2026. Goyal highlighted that this will extend to numerous sectors, particularly those that are labour-intensive, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Indian businesses within the New Zealand market.

He also pointed out that free trade agreements encompass more than just tariff reductions; they can facilitate quicker regulatory approvals, stimulate business investments in India, and contribute to the establishment of resilient supply chains. India has been actively pursuing various trade agreements to broaden market access for domestic enterprises and strengthen its position in global supply chains.

Goyal noted that the agreement includes a commitment to significant direct investment, estimated at approximately Rs 2 lakh crore in India. He asserted that this pact will be advantageous for farmers, MSMEs, entrepreneurs, and workers, while also creating opportunities in science, technology, and innovation.

Enhanced Mobility and Edu Opportunities

The FTA also establishes a dedicated agricultural partnership aimed at improving farm productivity and increasing farmers’ incomes. This initiative includes the establishment of Centres of Excellence designed to enhance agricultural practices. Furthermore, the agreement facilitates greater mobility for Indian students and workers.

Goyal announced that young Indians pursuing education in New Zealand will be assured a work visa, allowing them to gain training and work experience in the country for a specified duration. This provision is expected to attract more Indian students to New Zealand, thereby strengthening educational ties between the two nations.

Highlighting the potential for Indian manufacturing, Goyal mentioned that companies like JCB, which originated in the United Kingdom, are exporting equipment manufactured in India to international markets. At the ceremony, the first shipment of JCB equipment destined for New Zealand was officially launched.

Export Growth and Resilient Supply Chains

Goyal noted that JCB exports equipment produced in India to 140 countries, with approximately 25 per cent of its total output being exported. He set a target for the company to increase the share of its Indian production designated for exports to 50 per cent. The India-New Zealand FTA is part of India’s broader strategy to expand trade partnerships, improve export access, and attract investment as businesses seek to diversify their markets and establish more resilient supply chains.

This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening economic ties between India and New Zealand, with the potential to enhance bilateral trade in goods and services significantly by 2030. The commitment to fostering a deeper economic partnership is expected to yield substantial benefits for both nations in the coming years.
