Pakistan T20I Captain Salman Ali Agha Considers Quitting T20Is to Focus on ODI World Cup

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan’s T20I captain, Salman Ali Agha, has indicated that he may take a hiatus from the T20 format as he shifts his focus towards the ICC ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship cycle. The experienced all-rounder is prioritising his preparation for these significant tournaments, suggesting that stepping aside from T20Is could help him manage his workload more effectively.

The upcoming 50-over World Cup is scheduled to take place in late 2027 across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Salman expressed that this tournament is the foremost milestone on his agenda, stating, “The World Cup is a long way to go, but one has to think about managing one’s schedule and workload.” He added that if a break from T20 cricket would aid his preparation for the World Cup and Tests, he is open to that possibility.

Scrutiny Over Captaincy and Recent Performance

Salman has been at the helm of the T20I team for more than a year; however, his leadership has faced increasing scrutiny. His performance in the ongoing Pakistan Super League has been underwhelming, with merely 84 runs achieved in eight matches, hitting the 20-run mark only once. This inconsistency has drawn attention, especially following a less than stellar showing during the T20 World Cup, where he accumulated only 60 runs across seven matches.

Despite some strong performances in domestic matches prior to the World Cup, Salman has struggled to secure his position in the No. 3 batting order. Pakistan’s failure to advance to the semifinal stage of the tournament, despite playing all their matches in Sri Lanka, has intensified criticism regarding his captaincy.

In contrast to his struggles in T20s, Salman’s performance in longer white-ball formats has been commendable. During a recent ODI series in Bangladesh, he shone brightly, achieving scores of 106, 64, and 5, which showcases his technical prowess in those formats. This evident disparity in his performances seems to reinforce his inclination to focus on formats that align with his strengths.

Concerns About Selection Criteria in Pakistan Cricket

Alongside his considerations regarding T20I participation, Salman Agha has raised concerns about Pakistan’s current selection practices. He has specifically critiqued the approach of fast-tracking players based solely on their performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). While he acknowledges the league’s significance as a scouting platform, he warns against neglecting the traditional pathway of domestic cricket.

Salman suggested that a more thorough process should be implemented, one where emerging talent identified in the PSL is subsequently tested in domestic competitions. “We should then review their performances there and decide if they are ready for international cricket,” he explained. This advocated methodology is aimed at creating a robust developmental bridge to better prepare players for the demands of the international stage.

He further noted that history has shown instances of players being hastily selected from the PSL who later struggled to adapt to the pressures of international cricket. By promoting a sustainable talent pipeline, Salman hopes to enhance the team’s performance and resilience at the highest levels of competition.
