Pakistan Signs MoU With US Drone Company Powerus Amid Merging Plans

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the American drone firm Powerus. This arrangement reportedly includes an initial order related to drone technology, as co-founder Brett Velicovich stated to Reuters on Wednesday. While he mentioned specific aspects of the agreement, he did not disclose any details due to security concerns. Furthermore, the value of the initial order remains confidential.

The MoU and the initial procurement order have not been reported prior to this announcement, indicating that the collaboration between the two entities has been kept under wraps. Powerus, which provides unmanned aerial and maritime drones for both military and industrial applications, is preparing to merge with Aureus Greenway Holdings, a publicly traded company supported by the sons of former US President Donald Trump.

According to company statements, the merger is anticipated to conclude in early October. Regulatory filings reveal that Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump hold stakes in Aureus through their investment fund, American Ventures, which is projected to maintain a 9.9 per cent beneficial ownership in the combined entity after the merger.

Meetings Between Powerus and Pakistan’s Military

The Pakistani military announced on Wednesday that a delegation from Powerus, headed by Velicovich, met with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. The discussions centred on defence procurement, production, and the long-term strengthening of capabilities. Notably, the military statement did not mention the MoU specifically. Attempts to obtain further comments from the military’s media wing regarding the agreement were unsuccessful during business hours.

The timing of this agreement appears auspicious, as relations between Washington and Islamabad have reportedly improved after years of tension. Former President Trump has publicly acknowledged Pakistan’s army chief, while Islamabad has implemented various economic and defence initiatives to enhance its ties with the United States.

Andrew Fox, founder and chief executive of Powerus, expressed that Pakistan’s private defence sector is still in its nascent stage, indicating significant opportunities for US companies. He elaborated that the objective is to foster a technological partnership that integrates leading technologies from both the US and Pakistan.

Company and Investment Considerations

Despite the emerging relationship, Fox dismissed the notion that the company’s growth is tied to the involvement of the Trump family. He emphasized that contracts are awarded based on merit and that Trump’s sons do not directly influence the business operations or negotiations. A spokesperson for Donald Trump Jr stated that he is a passive investor and has no engagement in the management of Powerus, particularly in matters related to contracts.

The spokesperson clarified that Donald Trump Jr had no prior knowledge of the agreement with Pakistan and did not participate in its negotiation or execution. Eric Trump was notably unavailable for comment when sought for clarification regarding his role.

White House Special Assistant to the President, Anna Kelly, stated that there are no conflicts of interest regarding this arrangement. As the situation develops, further details may emerge regarding the implications of this MoU for both parties involved, highlighting a potentially pivotal moment in US-Pakistan relations.
