Owaisi Celebrates Abdul El-Sayed’s Historic US Senate Victory

The CSR Journal Magazine

Asaduddin Owaisi, the chief of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), expressed his enthusiasm over the recent election of Abdul El-Sayed to the United States Senate. El-Sayed’s victory marks a historic moment as he becomes the first Muslim to hold a Senate seat in the US. Owaisi seized this opportunity to advocate for a stronger political identity among Muslims in Uttar Pradesh (UP).

He urged them to take charge of their political representation. Owaisi’s remarks came on November 4, shortly after El-Sayed defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers in Michigan’s midterm elections. He highlighted the importance of this achievement for Muslims, suggesting that it should inspire similar political aspirations in UP.

Owaisi’s metaphor of “Abdul” has been a recurring theme in his rhetoric, aimed at encouraging Muslims to assert their political agency. In his statement, Owaisi remarked that the time has come for the “Abdul” in UP to assert his political identity and not remain subservient to others. He emphasised that Muslims should no longer be relegated to supporting roles in political leadership, but instead should strive for positions of power.

Criticism of Political Rivals

Owaisi’s comments were also directed at the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress, which he accused of failing to provide adequate opportunities for Muslim leadership. He has repeatedly claimed that these parties have relied on Muslim votes without empowering the community to take on leadership roles. The AIMIM leader has used the “Abdul” metaphor to challenge the political narratives of these parties, particularly in the context of the upcoming UP Assembly elections.

During his campaign, Owaisi has asserted that Muslims must cultivate their own political leaders rather than relying on established figures from other communities. He declared at a rally in Tanda that “Abdul will become a leader, an MLA, an MP,” indicating a shift towards self-representation. This call for political independence is a central theme in Owaisi’s strategy as he prepares for the 2027 elections.

Furthermore, Owaisi has intensified his critiques of SP leader Akhilesh Yadav, suggesting that the party’s identity should be redefined to reflect its familial ties rather than its broader socialist principles. His rhetoric aims to galvanise support among Muslim voters who may feel overlooked by traditional political parties.

Significance of El-Sayed’s Victory

Abdul El-Sayed’s election victory is notable not only for its historical implications but also for the challenges he faced during the campaign. The former public health official overcame significant opposition, including attacks on his religious identity and political affiliations. His win is seen as a reflection of changing dynamics within American politics, particularly among diverse communities.

El-Sayed’s campaign was marked by a strong stance on issues such as the Palestinian cause and opposition to US military aid to Israel, which drew both support and criticism. His victory has been interpreted as a significant gain for the Democratic Party, especially in a state that had previously backed Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

Owaisi’s enthusiasm over El-Sayed’s success serves as a rallying point for his own political ambitions in India. Despite the AIMIM’s previous setbacks in UP, including failing to secure any seats in the 2022 Assembly elections, Owaisi appears determined to leverage this momentum to advocate for Muslim political representation in the state.
