A 30-year-old female nurse was discovered unconscious in the washroom of NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata during her night shift, and was subsequently declared dead. The incident occurred on the night of August 12, 2026, and authorities were alerted shortly thereafter.

According to police, the Entally Police Station received information from the NRS Out Post regarding the nurse’s death in the High Dependency Unit (HDU), specifically in Room No. 33. Following the alert, the DD Homicide team, accompanied by local police personnel, promptly arrived at the scene to investigate.

Nurse’s Working Shift and Circumstances

The deceased was reportedly a resident of Dum Dum, Kolkata, and began her night shift at around 8 pm on August 12. She was last seen by her colleagues when she went to the washroom at approximately 10:20 pm. When several minutes passed without her return, her fellow nursing staff grew concerned and attempted to contact her around 10:27 pm, but received no answer.

Upon realising the situation, two individuals present at the hospital, identified as Md Samser Alam and Shreya Gaine, broke open the washroom door, which was locked from inside. They discovered the nurse unconscious inside the washroom and immediately sought medical assistance. However, after examination, the attending physician pronounced her dead.

Authorities conducted a thorough investigation at the site. Preliminary findings indicated no visible signs of injury on the nurse’s body, and no suicide note was found. These initial observations have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.

Investigation Underway

The police have stated that an inquest and post-mortem examination will take place to ascertain the exact cause of death. Investigators are focusing their efforts on the nurse’s activities following her arrival for duty, as well as the events occurring inside the washroom leading up to her unconscious state.

At this stage, law enforcement has not disclosed any definitive conclusions concerning the cause or circumstances of the nurse’s death. The results of the forthcoming post-mortem report, in combination with ongoing inquiries, are anticipated to offer further insight into the tragic incident.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are likely to scrutinise not only the immediate environment of the nurse but also her interactions with colleagues during her shift. This situation has generated significant concern within the medical community, emphasizing the need for thorough examinations of staff welfare in hospital settings.
