NTA Dismisses 50 Staff Members Following UGC-NET Re-tests

The CSR Journal Magazine

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the removal of 50 staff members as part of its response to errors found in three UGC-NET papers. This decision aims to mitigate the fallout from the agency’s announcement regarding re-tests for the English, Commerce, and Sociology examinations. The NTA is ushering in professionals to assume key leadership roles, facing intensified scrutiny due to repeated lapses in major examinations.

This action was taken shortly after the NTA declared the need for re-tests, which has spurred opposition protests and discontent among student groups. Critics argue that the agency’s mistakes have detrimental effects on students’ academic and career trajectories, while the NTA asserts that it is acting in the best interests of candidates and reviewing its internal processes to avoid future errors.

Government Oversight and Meeting with Education Minister

The ministry has now advertised ten new leadership roles, including positions for chief technology officer and chief finance officer, among others. Furthermore, domain specialists from private sectors will be recruited to enhance cybersecurity and psychometric practices within the agency. Minister Joshi has emphasised the importance of strict compliance with existing examination protocols and has called for an urgent overhaul of the confidential examination processes.

Protests and Reactions from Political Leaders

The NTA has scheduled the re-tests for the English and Commerce papers on September 9, while the Sociology examination will take place on September 10. The UGC-NET June 2026 was conducted from June 22 to 30 across 87 subjects, supporting the eligibility for junior research fellowships, assistant professors, and admission to PhD programmes. Sources from NTA stated that the agency acted quickly in response to complaints it received and opted for re-tests for the betterment of candidates.
