No Lockdown or Fuel Shortages, Amit Shah Reassures Amid Iran Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah sought to alleviate public anxiety regarding the potential for a lockdown similar to that experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Speaking during a roadshow in Guwahati ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Shah confirmed there are no plans for a lockdown while assuring that fuel supplies are stable and reliable. He pointed out that despite the global crisis, India is well-prepared to manage its energy needs.

Government’s Assurance on Fuel Supply and Stability

Addressing the rising sense of unease among citizens, Shah remarked, “There is no question of a lockdown. The situation is normal. There is a crisis all over the world. We all have to face our own problems. But under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian government has made a very good arrangement. There is no problem of petrol, diesel or cooking gas anywhere. Everything is running smoothly.” His statements come as discussions on social media and among various public groups concerning potential disruptions reminiscent of the Covid-19 pandemic have intensified.

Government’s Strategy to Maintain Public Confidence

This clarification is part of a wider initiative by the government to quell rumors and sustain public assurance amidst escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Authorities have asserted that even though international circumstances are unstable, there is no immediate risk to domestic stability or supply chains that would warrant drastic measures, including a nationwide lockdown.

Prime Minister’s Emphasis on Energy Security

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also sought to reassure the populace, underlining India’s diversified strategies for sourcing crude oil and natural gas. After a significant meeting with chief ministers from states and Union Territories, he highlighted the importance of the strategic petroleum reserves established over the past decade, which serve as a key protective measure against external disruptions. Additionally, he encouraged all states to collaborate as “Team India” in managing the domestic repercussions of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has persisted for almost a month.

Efforts to Strengthen Energy Infrastructure

As part of long-term energy security plans, the government is looking to expand these strategic reserves further. Last week, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri similarly dismissed any notions of a lockdown, urging citizens to refrain from panic buying. He acknowledged that recent international developments, including issues around the Strait of Hormuz, have instigated temporary apprehensions in global energy markets but remained firm in asserting that India’s energy supply is secure with contingency measures in place to manage any fluctuations.

Transition to Piped Natural Gas for Enhanced Supply

The government is also accelerating advancements in piped natural gas (PNG) infrastructure, particularly in urban areas. This transition from LPG cylinders to PNG, where feasible, is designed to reduce reliance on imports and bolster supply reliability. Authorities assert that this shift will not only enhance resilience but also decrease costs for consumers while alleviating the subsidy burden on the government.

Commitment to Monitoring Global Developments

With several assurances from high-ranking officials, the government has reiterated that there is no reason for public alarm. As global tensions continue to evolve, authorities intend to closely monitor the situation while ensuring that essential supplies remain uninterrupted and public confidence is preserved.
