Nitin Gadkari Confirms ‘No Fuel Shortage’, Cites Govt Initiatives for Energy Self-Reliance

The CSR Journal Magazine

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has stated that there is currently no shortage of gas or fuel in India. This declaration comes amid rising tensions in West Asia, which have raised concerns about energy supplies. Gadkari outlined various government policies designed to prevent any fuel shortages for the public.

He acknowledged India’s heavy dependence on fuel imports, noting that approximately eighty-six per cent of the country’s energy needs are met through imports. However, Gadkari remained optimistic about the measures being taken to combat potential challenges, reinforcing that the government’s policies are effective in maintaining a steady supply.

Focus on Alternative Energy Sources

The minister highlighted the government’s commitment to reducing imports by integrating alternative energy solutions, such as electric vehicles and ethanol-based transport options. Gadkari mentioned that initiatives are underway to manufacture vehicles running entirely on ethanol, positioning these developments as vital components in the transition towards a self-reliant energy framework.

Moreover, he revealed that India spends around Rs 22 lakh crores annually on importing fossil fuels. To alleviate this financial burden, the focus is shifting towards renewable energy sources, particularly solar power. The sales figures for electric vehicles and buses have reportedly shown a substantial increase of 40 to 50 per cent, indicating a growing market interest in sustainable transportation solutions.

Another significant initiative discussed by Gadkari includes the establishment of a bamboo grass-based bioethanol plant in Numaligarh, Assam. He noted that the facility is currently producing ethanol that is blended into petrol, marking a step towards greater energy self-sufficiency and pollution reduction.

Government’s Reassurances on Energy Supply Stability

In conjunction with Gadkari’s statements, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has confirmed that India’s crude oil inventories remain sufficient for at least the next two months. According to Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Ministry, the country’s refineries are performing optimally, and no disruptions at retail outlets have been reported.

Sharma also commented on the global oil market, noting that Brent crude prices have surged from around $70 per barrel two months prior to over $100 per barrel currently. Despite this significant rise in global prices, she assured that there would be no increases in petrol and diesel prices for domestic consumers at this time.

The government has also secured safe passage for its vessels amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has caused notable disruptions in global fuel and LPG supplies. This measure is part of a wider strategy to ensure that India remains insulated from external supply shocks.
