Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, emphasised the urgent need for modernising infrastructure in light of his recent experience with traffic in Mumbai. During his journey from Worli to the venue of the 22nd Indo-American Corporate Excellence Awards, he faced significant delays, arriving nearly an hour late. This situation served as a practical illustration of the challenges related to the city’s outdated traffic systems.

Speaking to attendees at the awards ceremony, Gadkari remarked, “Today I got late by an hour to reach here for this programme, because I got stuck in the traffic from Worli to this hotel.” This anecdote reflected not only his personal inconvenience but also the broader issues faced by commuters in urban areas of India.

Recollecting his time as Maharashtra’s Public Works Minister, Gadkari noted that during his tenure from 1995 to 2000, he oversaw the construction of numerous flyovers and major projects such as the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. However, he acknowledged that the technologies available at that time were not as advanced as what could be utilised today.

Call for Upgraded Infrastructure and New Technologies

The Union Minister argued that the infrastructure designed several decades ago has become insufficient to handle the rising traffic volumes. He advised Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, that existing flyovers should evolve with the integration of more innovative construction methods rather than relying only on conventional designs.

In discussing future infrastructure plans, Gadkari referred to a proposed programme in Pune worth Rs 50,000 crore. This project aims to incorporate new technology sourced from Malaysia, facilitating the construction of multiple levels of flyovers supported by a single set of pillars, which could accommodate a metro corridor above. He indicated that such advancements may offer sustainable solutions for growing urban congestion.

Gadkari’s views underline a strategic direction for infrastructure planning, aiming to ensure that developments meet the contemporary needs of urban transportation. He asserted that embracing modern technology could play a pivotal role in tackling these challenges effectively.

Strengthening India-US Cooperation and Industry Growth

During his address, Gadkari also spotlighted the importance of enhancing strategic and economic cooperation between India and the United States. He praised the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) for its efforts in identifying areas where collaboration can flourish, suggesting that India’s capabilities could be effectively combined with American resources and expertise.

“Some people turn problems into opportunities, while others turn opportunities into problems. However, let us embrace the challenges,” he stated, encapsulating the potential for mutual growth by aligning India’s strengths with US technology and resources.

Furthermore, Gadkari pointed out the significant growth within India’s automobile sector, noting that the country has recently surpassed Japan to become the world’s third-largest automobile market, following the United States and China. He concluded with an observation on how advancements in knowledge and innovation will continue to be crucial for India’s economic development, recommending that industrial collaboration span various sectors, including agriculture and defence.
