Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah is preparing for his inaugural foreign trip, which takes him to the United States to lead a high-profile delegation at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This visit is particularly significant as it marks Shah’s first international engagement since he assumed office in March this year. Scheduled to take place on September 24, his address during the General Debate is of considerable importance to Nepalese diplomacy.

The visit will feature a series of critical discussions centred around climate change and global warming, topics that Shah aims to highlight during his time in New York. Foreign ministry officials have confirmed that alongside the Prime Minister, the Nepali delegation will comprise several key figures, including Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal and Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, along with other senior governmental representatives.

Notably, Minister Khanal has already departed for New York, having left on September 19. His agenda in the United States includes participating in high-level meetings and ministerial engagements, complemented by planned bilateral talks with various international counterparts and dignitaries.

Focus on Climate Change

During his visit, Prime Minister Shah is anticipated to emphasise the critical intersection between climate change and the recent devastating flash floods in Nepal that occurred on August 26. The floods resulted in more than 1,450 fatalities, and approximately 6,000 individuals are still reported missing. This catastrophic event underscores the urgency of addressing environmental issues on a global scale.

Shah’s discussions are likely to appeal to international leaders for increased attention and resources aimed at combating climate change which disproportionately affects developing nations. The Prime Minister aims to link Nepal’s pressing challenges to the broader narrative of global environmental responsibilities during his UNGA address.

Additionally, the Nepali delegation’s overarching goal is to forge collaborations with other nations to tackle climate-related issues more effectively. This aligns with Shah’s vision of a united effort in mitigating the impacts of climate change and promoting sustainable development.

Political Engagement and Consultations

In a related political context, Prime Minister Shah convened a meeting on September 21 with key leaders of the Nepali Congress Party, including Parliamentary Party leader Bhishmaraj Angdembe and Vice-President Bishwa Prakash Sharma. The discussions, held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Singha Durbar in Kathmandu, aimed at fostering consultation and collaboration ahead of the UNGA visit.

This meeting reflects Shah’s commitment to engaging with domestic political factions before embarking on an international mission. The consultations are intended to ensure a unified front regarding the pressing issues he will raise on the global stage, thereby strengthening Nepal’s position in international forums.

Shah’s return to Kathmandu is scheduled for September 26, while Minister Khanal is set to arrive back on September 29. These engagements are pivotal not only due to the international focus of Shah’s agenda but also in terms of establishing a cohesive approach to addressing national concerns related to climate adversity.
