Mohali: IISER Scientist Dies after Violent Clash with Neighbour Over Parking

Punjab: Dr. Abhishek Swarnkar, a 39-year-old scientist, was killed following a violent altercation with his neighbour. The dispute was over a parking issue in Mohali’s Sector 67. Dr. Swarnkar was a researcher at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali.
He was attacked by his neighbor, Monty, after a verbal argument over parking escalated. The alleged incident occurred on Tuesday night. Swarnkar, who had recently undergone a kidney transplant and was on dialysis, was allegedly pushed on ground and assaulted by Monty.

Parking Dispute Turns Deadly

According to reports, the altercation was the result of ongoing parking disputes between Dr. Swarnkar and his neighbour Monty. Swarnkar’s mother, Malti Devi, while talking to the media stated that the family had been repeatedly harassed by Monty. Monty allegedly harassed the Swarnkar family over where they parked their motorcycle.
Malti Devi described how the tension had been building, between Monty and his family constantly objecting to the parking spot. On Tuesday the night of the incident, Swarnkar moved his bike in response to Monty’s demands. However the situation quickly escalated, turning into chaos leading to violence.

CCTV Footage Captures the Assault

In the CCTV footage of the incident Dr. Swarnkar can be seen walking towards his motorcycle when the argument broke out. Meanwhile, Monty is seen pushing Swarnkar to the ground and physically attacking him.
During the argument Swarnkar warned Monty of filing a Police complaint. However Monty shouted “Tu complain karega?” ( “you will file the complaint?” ), pushed the scientist to the ground and hit him. Dr Swarnkar, collapsed on the spot and died.
The neighbours of the society also tried to intervene, but by the time Swarnkar’s family rushed him to the hospital, he had already succumbed to his injuries. Swarnkar’s mother recounted that her son had planned to file a complaint against Monty, but the situation took a tragic turn.

Police Investigation Ongoing

The Mohali police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Monty. The authorities are currently searching for the accused, who is on the run. The probe is ongoing, with the police reviewing the CCTV footage to gather further information and evidence in the case.
Meanwhile, the incident has sparked massive outrage in Mohali with Swarnkar’s family demanding strict action against the accused.
