Mizoram’s Sairang Railway Station Welcomes its First Cargo Train Delivering 25,900 quintals of rice from Punjab

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mizoram is undergoing a notable transformation in its transportation infrastructure with the introduction of passenger and freight train services. This advancement has enhanced connectivity across the state, contributing to its economic development and boosting tourism.

A significant milestone was reached when the inaugural cargo train from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) arrived at Sairang Railway Station on March 3. The train, comprising 42 wagons, successfully delivered approximately 25,900 quintals of rice sourced from Punjab. This delivery marks an integral step in improving rail-based freight connectivity and strengthening the supply chain of essential commodities in the region.

Significant Railway Infrastructure Development

The inauguration of the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line on September 13, 2025, represents a landmark achievement for the people of Mizoram, directly linking Aizawl to the national railway network. This project is set to enhance transportation options significantly, fostering economic growth and promoting tourism throughout the region. Since its commissioning, freight operations along the Bairabi-Sairang segment have experienced considerable progress. Following the opening, the first freight rake, consisting of 21 cement wagons, was dispatched to Sairang, initiating regular freight movement within the state.

Expansion of Freight Services

Between April 2025 and March 2026, the Sairang Terminal handled over 30 freight rakes, illustrating the gradual advancement of rail-based cargo transportation in Mizoram. This period saw the unloading of 3.5 rakes of cement at the terminal, along with other commodities like automobiles, fertilizers, stone chips, and sand. This diversification underscores Sairang’s evolution into an emerging freight hub, enhancing infrastructure development and addressing the need for construction materials and essential goods in the state.

Growth in High-Value Cargo Handling

The first automobile rake, which transported 119 passenger vehicles, arrived at Sairang in December 2025, further showcasing the line’s capability to accommodate high-value bulk cargo. Additionally, Indian Railways has initiated measures to strengthen parcel logistics, including the introduction of refrigerated parcel van services to support the transportation of horticultural and perishable goods. This development is expected to enhance market access for local farmers and traders significantly.

Boosting Tourism in the Region

The newly established railway line is also positively influencing tourism in Mizoram. Recent months have seen an influx of visitors, further highlighted by the arrival of the Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train at Sairang Railway Station on February 12. This premium tourist train carried 81 travelers from India and countries including the United States and Nepal, marking Mizoram’s increasing recognition on both national and international tourism platforms. Enhanced accessibility has attracted both domestic and international tourists, fostering employment opportunities in hospitality and related sectors and supporting eco-tourism and cultural tourism initiatives.

Public Response and Future Connectivity

Since the start of train services on the Bairabi-Sairang line in September 2025, public response has been overwhelmingly positive. The Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express recorded occupancy levels above 150% in both directions, while the Sairang-Guwahati Express and Sairang-Kolkata Express also reported passenger numbers exceeding 100%. On February 9, a new Sairang to Silchar train service was launched, further enhancing regional connectivity and linking Mizoram to the Barak Valley in Assam, a vital educational and commercial hub.

Transformative Impact of Railway Connectivity

The expansion of railway connectivity in Mizoram signifies a critical turning point for the state. By improving transportation links, stimulating economic growth, and promoting tourism, the railways are playing a crucial role in the ongoing transformation of the region. As infrastructure continues to advance, Mizoram is poised to become a more accessible and appealing destination within Northeast India.
