Mizoram Launches First ‘Pluck & Pay’ Festival to Enhance Community-Led Tourism

The CSR Journal Magazine

The inaugural ‘Pluck & Pay’ Festival, which began on September 23, 2026, in the villages of Tualte and Chawngtlai, serves as the starting point for Mizoram’s festival season. This event introduces a unique form of tourism that actively engages local communities by allowing visitors to harvest their own produce while offering direct economic benefits to farmers. Jointly organised by the Tourism Department of the Government of Mizoram and the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Khawzawl, the three-day festival runs until September 25.

The festival emphasises direct interaction between visitors and local agricultural practices, enabling attendees to pick fresh produce themselves and pay for their harvest. This model aims to create economic links between rural families and tourists, fostering community involvement in the tourism sector.

According to Lalnghinglova Hmar, the state’s Tourism Minister, this initiative seeks to demonstrate how tourism can be beneficial to both visitors and host communities. Hmar emphasised that such community-driven tourism approaches not only enhance visitor experiences but also promote sustainable development within the region.

Focus on Economic Growth and Local Engagement

The economic impact of the festival extends beyond agricultural activities. By promoting local cuisine, homestays, and cultural performances, the ‘Pluck & Pay’ initiative is designed to stimulate various sectors within the local economy, thereby allowing communities to benefit from increased tourism traffic. The experience generated by these visitors can create demand for multiple services and products, including handicrafts and transportation.

This community-centric tourism proposition also aims to position Khawzawl as a distinguished destination where visitors can engage with the landscape and local livelihoods. By highlighting the interconnection between agriculture, culture, and tourism, the initiative aspires to enrich the visitor experience and foster economic resilience.

As the festival unfolded, participants could enjoy traditional Mizo music and dance, sample local dishes, and engage with artisanal crafts, adding depth to their understanding of the region’s cultural identity. This multi-faceted approach is intended to enhance both the educational and experiential aspects of rural tourism.

Upcoming Festivals as Part of Broader Tourism Strategy

The timing of the ‘Pluck & Pay’ Festival is part of a larger celebration of Mizoram’s tourism identity with several other festivals planned in the coming months. Events such as the Anthurium Festival in Reiek, the Hnahsin Kût in Champhai, and the Travel Fest in Aizawl are set to take place during this vibrant festival season. Additionally, the calendar includes the Leitlangpui Music Festival, Winter Festival, Tlaizawng Paradise Festival, and the Sakawrhmuituai Sunset Event, promising rich experiences for both tourists and locals alike.

Official statistics presented in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly indicate a significant rise in tourist arrivals, which increased from 4,27,302 in 2024 to 8,41,322 in 2025. This growth signifies a potential for greater economic participation across the state, highlighting the importance of developing community-focused tourism that aligns with local identities and economic opportunities.

The state government aims to ensure that the benefits of this tourism growth are shared across various sectors, thereby enhancing both the local economy and the biodiversity of cultural experiences. As Mizoram embraces this evolving landscape of tourism, the focus remains on cultivating strong bonds between visitors and local communities for sustainable economic development.
