Misinterpreted by enemy: Iranian President Clarifies Remarks on Gulf Attacks Amid Rising Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Sunday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed concerns regarding his earlier statements on attacks impacting Gulf nations, suggesting that his remarks had been “misinterpreted by the enemy.” This clarification followed interpretations that indicated a potential cessation of strikes on neighboring countries. During a state television address, Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s desire for positive relations with regional countries, asserting that the nation had no intention to create rifts. He stated, “It has repeatedly been said we are brothers and must have good relations with neighbours. However, we are forced to retaliate to attacks, but this does not mean we have a dispute with a neighbouring country or want to upset their people.” According to state media, his comments were aimed at combating narratives that seek to incite divisions within the region.

Apology to Gulf Neighbors

Pezeshkian’s comments came in the wake of earlier statements where he expressed regret to Gulf countries affected by Iranian military actions targeting US facilities in the area. “I personally apologise to neighbouring countries that were affected by Iran’s actions,” he noted, while encouraging these nations not to participate in the US-Israel military efforts against Iran. Additionally, he indicated that a temporary leadership council in Tehran had agreed to suspend attacks on neighboring states unless those attacks originated from their territories. This statement, however, faced backlash from hardliners in Iran, leading a deputy leader within the president’s office to assert that Iranian forces would respond decisively to any assaults from US bases in the region.

Reactions to Domestic and International Statements

Criticism of Pezeshkian’s comments intensified after remarks made by US President Donald Trump, who interpreted the Iranian president’s statements as an apology and indicative of weakness. On Saturday, Trump suggested that Iran’s expression of regret signifies a surrender. Following Trump’s comments, concern arose within Iran about the perception of their leadership both domestically and abroad. An academic from the University of Tehran noted, “After that video came out, Trump had a Truth Social statement saying that Iran has apologised, saying that this shows that they are surrendering,” which triggered criticism towards Pezeshkian from political adversaries in Iran.

Ongoing Conflict and Escalating Violence

As the conflict continues, President Trump indicated that the US is not inclined towards negotiations with Tehran. Speaking on Air Force One, he remarked that an ongoing military campaign could potentially render negotiations unnecessary if the governance structure in Iran were to collapse. “At some point, I don’t think there will be anybody left, maybe to say ‘We surrender,’” he stated. The ongoing conflict has escalated, with Israeli forces implementing additional strikes across Iranian territories, including areas within Tehran. Iranian officials report that the military operations undertaken by the US and Israel have resulted in at least 1,332 civilian casualties, alongside thousands of injuries, while Iranian missile and drone strikes are reported to have killed ten individuals in Israel. Additionally, the Iranian military has targeted US installations and allied nations that host American troops, with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates reporting drone incidents during the weekend.

Broader Regional Implications

The situation has extended beyond the borders of Iran, impacting Lebanon where Israel has issued warnings against the government regarding the Iran-aligned Hezbollah group. Israeli strikes on areas controlled by Hezbollah, including southern Beirut, have reportedly claimed around 300 lives since the beginning of the week. The intensification of the conflict is contributing to instability in global energy markets, pushing oil prices to new highs and prompting some regional producers to limit output.
