Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday placed peace and tranquillity along the border at the centre of their bilateral discussions, with both leaders agreeing that stable relations require continued progress on resolving differences between the two countries.

Meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Modi and Xi discussed the boundary question, trade imbalances, supply chains, people-to-people exchanges and regional and global issues, against the backdrop of a cautious improvement in India-China relations.

Border Peace Key To Bilateral Progress

Modi emphasised that peace and tranquillity in the border areas remained an essential foundation for the continued development of India-China relations.

The Prime Minister stressed the need for both countries to observe existing agreements and understandings on border-related issues.

The boundary question featured prominently in the discussions, with the two leaders expressing their commitment to finding a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement.

Both sides agreed that efforts to resolve the issue should proceed from the political perspective of their overall bilateral relationship and take into account the long-term interests of the people of both countries.

Modi and Xi also welcomed the steady progress in bilateral relations since their previous meeting in Tianjin in August 2025.

The two leaders reaffirmed the need to approach India-China ties from a strategic and long-term perspective and agreed that differences between the two countries should not be allowed to become disputes.

Modi Highlights Three Principles For Ties

During the meeting, Modi said relations between the two countries should be guided by three principles: mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.

The leaders also discussed the scope for expanding people-to-people engagement between India and China.

They took note of progress already made in this area and underscored the need to promote further cultural exchanges, strengthen business linkages and facilitate greater mobility between the two countries.

The discussions also covered economic and trade relations, including concerns on both sides over structural trade imbalances, supply chain issues and market access.

Modi and Xi underlined the need to address these concerns and work towards facilitating meaningful and predictable access to each other’s markets.

Wider Cooperation And Global Issues Discussed

Beyond bilateral matters, the two leaders agreed that India and China should continue expanding areas of common ground on regional and global issues.

They also discussed the need for cooperation in addressing wider challenges.

Modi appreciated China’s support for India’s BRICS chairship and its contribution to the successful conduct of the BRICS Summit 2026.

The meeting came as India and China show signs of a cautious thaw following years of tensions along the border.

Xi’s visit is his first to India in nearly seven years, and both countries have taken steps to restore bilateral engagement since Modi and Xi last met in Tianjin in August 2025.

Against that backdrop, the emphasis on peace and tranquillity along the border emerged as one of the central messages from the latest Modi-Xi meeting, with both leaders linking the future development of bilateral ties to the management and eventual resolution of their longstanding differences.
