Meghalaya Chief Minister Condemns Sexual Harassment of Nagaland Doctor at AIIMS Gorakhpur

The CSR Journal Magazine

Meghalaya’s Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, has expressed strong condemnation regarding the alleged molestation of a female doctor from Nagaland, who is currently serving at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Referring to the incident as “deeply shameful,” Sangma emphasized the ongoing issues of racial discrimination and sexual harassment faced by women from the North East region, urging that such incidents should not be trivialized or forgotten. In a statement on social media, he highlighted the need for stricter action against those responsible.

Details of the Incident

The alleged harassment occurred on February 22, around 8 PM, while the doctor was returning from Orion Mall in Mohaddipur. According to local police reports, she was chased for approximately one and a half kilometers before being molested. Following the incident, two individuals were arrested and the motorcycle presumed to be involved was confiscated.

Community Response and Police Action

The complainant, associated with NAFORD, an organization representing doctors from Nagaland, filed a formal complaint with the authorities. The organization has also reached out to the Chief Minister, urging immediate and severe consequences for the accused. Police officials stated that a case was launched under several relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code in response to the doctor’s complaint.

Police Investigation Underway

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (City) Abhinav Tyagi, the AIIMS police department received a report on the evening of February 22 detailing the harassment incident involving the young female doctor.

Following the receipt of this information, authorities acted swiftly to register a complaint and apprehend the alleged perpetrators. The ongoing investigation aims to address the serious nature of the allegations and ensure that justice is served.

Call for Societal Change

In his remarks, Chief Minister Sangma pointed out that tolerating such offenses against women constitutes a failure of societal norms. He urged the local community and authorities to remember that these individuals are brothers and sisters within the human community.

This incident highlights the need for enhancing safety and respect for women, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds.
