Sensex Surges 2,008 Points, Nifty Crosses 24,500

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian stock market experienced a significant rally on Thursday, with the Sensex climbing over 2,000 points and the Nifty reclaiming the 24,500 threshold. This surge was attributed to widespread buying across various sectors, including banking, automobiles, financial services, and real estate. The positive momentum was further supported by improving global sentiment and renewed interest from foreign investors.

The BSE Sensex concluded the day at 79,310.01, marking an increase of 2,008.61 points or 2.60 per cent. It opened at 78,910.94 and reached an intraday high of 79,470.03. Similarly, the NSE Nifty 50 finished at 24,536.60, up 576 points or 2.40 per cent, after opening at 24,378.05 and hitting an intraday peak of 24,579.90. This rally built upon the gains from Wednesday, when the Sensex closed at 77,301.40 and the Nifty at 23,960.60.

Among the notable gainers, Bajaj Finance led the Sensex with a rise of 7.77 per cent. Other significant contributors included IndiGo, which advanced by 5.80 per cent, and ICICI Bank, which saw an increase of 5.29 per cent. Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra & Mahindra also performed well, climbing 5.28 per cent and 5.15 per cent, respectively. However, not all stocks participated in the rally, with NTPC being the largest loser, falling by 1.65 per cent.

Sector Performance Highlights Gains

Sectoral indices largely reflected positive trends, particularly within financial services and automobile stocks, which were the standout performers. The Nifty Financial Services ex-Bank index rose by 4.24 per cent, while the Nifty Auto index gained 4.14 per cent. Other notable sectoral advancements included the Nifty Realty, which climbed 3.52 per cent, and the Nifty Private Bank, which increased by 3.44 per cent.

In contrast, the Nifty Media index was among the few to close lower, slipping by 0.84 per cent. The broader market also participated in the upswing, with large and mid-cap stocks showing stronger gains. The Nifty 100 increased by 2.22 per cent, the Nifty 200 by 2.15 per cent, and the Nifty 500 by 2 per cent. Smaller indices like the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 also saw gains, albeit at a slower pace.

Overall, the positive sentiment across sectors indicates a robust market environment, although certain areas remain under pressure. The performance of various indices suggests a healthy appetite for risk among investors, particularly in the financial and automotive sectors.

Global Factors and Foreign Investment Boost Market

Global developments played a crucial role in lifting market sentiment. Investors are closely monitoring the implications of the recent US midterm elections, which could influence President Donald Trump’s approach to foreign policy, particularly regarding the Iran conflict. Expectations for a potential de-escalation in geopolitical tensions have contributed to a decline in crude oil prices.

As of the latest market update, Brent crude was trading at $96.16 per barrel, up 1.63 per cent, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was at $88.62, up 0.57 per cent. A sustained decrease in crude prices could alleviate pressure on India’s import bill and inflation, further supporting market stability.

The return of foreign institutional investors (FIIs) to Indian equities has also bolstered market confidence. On November 4, FIIs purchased equities worth Rs 7,284.03 crore, following net purchases of Rs 6,836.81 crore the previous day. This resurgence in foreign buying has been linked to improving corporate earnings and a broader market recovery.

Experts suggest that while the current market conditions appear favourable, the sustainability of this rally will depend on continued positive participation and developments in global economic conditions. Investors are advised to remain vigilant regarding interest rate expectations and other external factors that could influence market dynamics.
