A 27-year-old man allegedly shot his former girlfriend dead inside a school in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on Monday before dying by suicide, police said. The incident took place at around 11:30 am at Children’s Academy School.

The victim was identified as 26-year-old teacher Nishat Fatima, who had been teaching at the school for around a year. Police said Fatima and the accused, Mohammad Saud, had been in a relationship and that she had recently ended it.

Man Entered School With Pistol

According to police, Saud arrived at the school carrying a pistol concealed inside a bag. He called Fatima downstairs before taking her towards a corridor on an upper floor.

A staff member followed the two as they went upstairs, according to a senior police official.

Police said that during a conversation in the corridor, Saud took out the pistol and shot Fatima. He then shot himself. Both were declared dead at the scene.

CCTV footage from the school reportedly showed Saud pulling Fatima by the arm towards the upper floor while students watched. Fatima appeared to resist as she was taken upstairs.

Gunfire Sends School Into Panic

Eyewitnesses told India Today’s sister channel AajTak that four rounds were fired, triggering panic among students and school staff.

Staff members alerted the police, who reached the school shortly after the incident.

The school caters to students up to Class 5, police said.

Police Examine CCTV And Security Protocols

Police are examining CCTV footage as part of the investigation, along with the school’s security arrangements and access procedures.

“We will have more clarity on this matter after the post-mortem report,” a police official said.

The official added that investigators would also examine the school’s security protocols and issue corrective directions if any lapses were identified.

Police are continuing to investigate how Saud entered the school with a firearm and reached the area where the teacher was present.
