Man Claims He Had Visions of American Airlines Flight 191 Crash Before 1979 Disaster

The CSR Journal Magazine

In the realm of aviation disasters, some incidents are shrouded in unsettling narratives that persist long after investigative reports are released. A notable instance involves American Airlines Flight 191, which tragically crashed near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on May 25, 1979, resulting in the loss of 273 lives. Years following the event, a man named David Booth asserted that he had undergone a series of foreboding visions about the calamity in the days prior to the crash, which he claimed to have reported to officials before the flight took off.

Consistent Nightly Visions

Booth characterized his experiences as unique, differentiating them from ordinary dreams. “Everybody has dreams, but this was different,” he explained. His visions consistently depicted a sunny day at a large airport with a substantial aircraft about to take off. He stated, “I can see American Airlines. The plane starts to taxi on the runway and begins to gain speed.” However, as it attempted to ascend, Booth sensed something was off. “The engine sounds wrong,” he recalled. The vision would culminate with the aircraft climbing briefly, only to roll and plunge back to the ground, ultimately resulting in an explosion.

Increasing Psychological Strain

Experiencing such distressing imagery once is troubling enough, but for Booth, it persisted for ten consecutive nights. Each recurrence intensified the psychological burden he faced. “Every day, it got worse. I was unable to shake the image from my mind,” he shared. Feeling an urgent need to act, Booth reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to relay his unsettling experiences.

Communicating with Officials

During his attempts to speak with the FAA, Booth connected with Jack Barker, the agency’s public affairs director. Barker noted that despite the vague nature of Booth’s account, he approached the calls with seriousness. “David sounded perfectly sane and credible,” Barker remarked. He actively listened to Booth’s recounting of the visions but indicated that the lack of specific details hindered any potential action. “There was nothing we could do based on his dreams,” Barker stated.

The Flight 191 Catastrophe

On May 25, 1979, the dreadful scenario that Booth anticipated unfolded when American Airlines Flight 191, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10 en route from Chicago to Los Angeles, crashed shortly after taking off. The left engine detached from the aircraft, leading to a devastating loss of control. The plane, rolling uncontrollably, crashed into an open field less than a mile from the airport, resulting in a fire that claimed the lives of all 271 individuals on board, along with two others on the ground.

Night of Disturbing Realization

Following the disaster, Booth mentioned that the last night of his visions concluded with a sense that they would not return. However, shortly after arriving at work the following day, he received the tragic news about the crash. “I only sat at my desk for 15 minutes when I heard the call,” he recounted. “I was informed that nobody survived.” This revelation deeply resonated with Barker, as he recognized the eerie alignment between Booth’s visions and the incident itself.

Uneasy Aftermath and Local Folklore

Years later, Booth reflected on his eerie experiences and remained troubled by thoughts of whether he could have altered the course of events. Following the crash, strange reports emerged from the local community, including sightings of unusual lights at the crash site and odd noises from nearby dwellings, contributing to the folklore surrounding the incident. Some accounts featured a disoriented man asking for his luggage or seeking assistance in making a phone call, adding layers of mystery to an already tragic event.

The Ominous Legacy of Flight 191

The tragic event has since acquired a foreboding reputation, with the flight number itself becoming associated with multiple fatal accidents over the years. For David Booth, those vivid ten nights of his foreshadowed vision haunt him to this day, leaving him pondering the mysteries that surround Flight 191.
