Saudi Airstrikes Target Key Port Controlled by Houthis

The CSR Journal Magazine

Saudi airstrikes reportedly struck a significant Red Sea port and oil facility in Hodeidah province on Monday, as stated by Yemen’s Houthi movement. The attacks resulted in injuries to seven individuals, according to the Houthi health ministry spokesman, Anees Alasbahi. This incident is part of an ongoing conflict involving the Iran-backed Houthis and a Saudi-led coalition that supports Yemen’s internationally recognised government.

The strikes specifically hit the Ras Issa port, injuring four civilians, while an additional three were wounded in a separate attack on an oil facility located in the Bajil district. The Houthi spokesperson condemned these actions, labelling them as blatant violations of international humanitarian law and characterising them as part of a series of war crimes targeting both civilians and essential infrastructure in Yemen.

Al-Masirah, the Houthi-affiliated television channel, reported earlier that Saudi Arabia had also attacked a pier and a commercial vessel at Ras Issa port. This port is the largest under Houthi control and serves as a crucial entry point for food and humanitarian aid to regions held by the group. Additionally, Ras Issa port is vital for the import and storage of oil, further emphasising its strategic importance in the ongoing conflict.

Impact on Civilian Infrastructure

In addition to the strikes on the port, Houthi media indicated that there were attacks on Sunday targeting the faculty of medicine at Hodeidah University. Residents in the vicinity reported hearing an explosion, although details regarding any casualties from this incident remain unclear. The continued targeting of educational institutions raises concerns regarding the safety of civilians amid the ongoing hostilities.

The Saudi-led coalition has defended its actions, claiming that it conducted a “precision operation” aimed at neutralising vital resources allegedly utilised by the Houthis. This assertion highlights the complex nature of the conflict, where both sides accuse each other of endangering civilian lives and infrastructure. The ongoing violence has created a dire humanitarian situation in Yemen, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict.

A fragile truce that was established in 2022 collapsed in July, following the Houthis’ decision to allow an Iranian aircraft to land in the capital, Sanaa. This act was seen as a challenge to Saudi control over Yemeni airspace and triggered a series of retaliatory strikes. The breakdown of the truce has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, leading to increased violence and instability.

Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen

The United Nations has reported that since the resurgence of fighting in Yemen, more than 1,600 individuals have lost their lives, and over 300,000 have been displaced. The ongoing conflict has significantly impacted the civilian population, with many struggling to access basic necessities such as food, clean water, and medical care. The situation remains critical, with humanitarian organisations calling for urgent assistance to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the war.

As the conflict continues, international observers are concerned about the potential for further escalation, particularly with the recent airstrikes on key infrastructure. The situation in Yemen remains fluid, and the international community is urged to engage in diplomatic efforts to restore peace and stability in the region. The humanitarian implications of the conflict necessitate immediate attention and action to support the affected populations.

In summary, the recent Saudi airstrikes on Hodeidah province exemplify the ongoing violence in Yemen, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict. With the humanitarian crisis deepening, the focus remains on the impact of military actions on civilian lives and infrastructure.
