Major drug trafficking crackdown in Tripura, 896 kg ganja, 90,000 bottles of banned syrup seized

Tripura has witnessed one of its largest anti-narcotics crackdowns in recent times, with security agencies seizing massive quantities of illegal drugs over the past ten days, Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Saturday.

The statement came a day after authorities recovered 90,000 bottles of banned cough syrup from a goods train at Jirania railway station in West Tripura — a major bust that has drawn national attention.

Sharing details of the operation on his X handle, Chief Minister Saha said, “In the last ten days, coordinated operations by the police and intelligence agencies have led to the recovery of 896 kg of ganja, 90,817 bottles of banned cough syrup, 180 Yaba tablets, and 27.78 grams of heroin.”

He lauded the Tripura Police, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), and intelligence units for their relentless efforts to curb the growing drug menace in the state. “The administration will continue to take strict action against those involved in the illegal drug trade. Our goal remains to make Tripura a drug-free state,” Saha affirmed.

Officials said that a significant portion of the seized narcotics was intended for trafficking to other northeastern states and even across international borders. Tripura’s proximity to Bangladesh and its porous frontiers have made it a key transit point for smuggling networks.

The recent operations involved intensified surveillance at railway stations, border check posts, and inter-district routes, resulting in a series of successful interceptions.

Appealing for public cooperation, the Chief Minister urged citizens to assist law enforcement agencies in identifying and reporting suspicious activities. “This fight against drugs requires collective responsibility. Together, we can protect our youth and society from this menace,” he added.

The government’s strong stance marks another step in Tripura’s ongoing war against narcotics — a campaign that has seen an upsurge in coordinated intelligence-driven raids in recent months.
