Maharashtra FDA Suspends Licences Of Three Mumbai Food Outlets Over Safety Concerns

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has moved to suspend the licences of three food establishments in Mumbai following recent inspections that revealed significant safety and hygiene violations. These inspections were part of a broader initiative to enhance food safety standards across the state.

The outlets affected by this decision include Prince of Wales Restaurant located in Khar, Cafe Sifarish in Andheri East, and a Zepto outlet in Chembur. Each of these establishments reportedly exhibited serious shortcomings in various safety protocols, prompting the FDA’s intervention.

Details Of Violations At Each Establishment

Prince of Wales Restaurant was notably cited for failures related to food temperature control, improper storage practices, and insufficient cleaning of equipment. Additionally, pest-control measures were found lacking, raising further concerns about food safety at the venue.

Cafe Sifarish also faced similar issues, with inspectors identifying inadequate food temperature management and problematic storage techniques. Furthermore, deficiencies concerning employee personal hygiene were observed. Despite being issued a notice to make necessary rectifications, the establishment did not provide a compliance report within the required timeframe.

Campaign For Enhanced Food Safety

The actions taken by the Maharashtra FDA align with the ongoing “Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra” campaign, spearheaded by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. This initiative aims to identify and address hygiene violations in food establishments throughout the state. The recent inspections have been pivotal in revealing a concerning trend of non-compliance with established food safety standards.

While the campaign is intended to bolster public health and safety, it has attracted criticism from some quarters. Critics argue that the approach may seem overly aggressive, labelling it as a “shoot first, talk later” method. Nonetheless, the FDA maintains that these inspections are necessary to safeguard consumer health.

The regulatory body emphasises that compliance with hygiene, storage, and food-handling norms is essential for the safety of consumers. The scrutiny on food establishments is anticipated to continue in the coming months, as the FDA aims to promote a high standard of food safety across the state.
