Maharashtra Deputy CM Sunetra Pawar Elected NCP President

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sunetra Pawar has been elected as the National President of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), as announced by party leader Praful Patel. This election took place on Thursday, marking a pivotal moment for the party following recent events.

On February 10, Sunetra Pawar assumed her role as the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister. In her capacity as Deputy CM, she has been entrusted with several key portfolios, including State Excise Duty, Sports and Youth Affairs, and Minorities Development and Auqaf.

Her new position follows the tragic death of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on January 28. Ajit Pawar lost his life in a plane crash involving a Learjet 45, which attempted to land at Baramati airport in Pune district. The aircraft crash-landed near the runway threshold, resulting in the loss of all five individuals on board. Among those who perished were Pawar, a personal security officer, a flight attendant, and two pilots. Ajit Pawar was en route from Mumbai to Baramati for campaigning related to the Zilla Panchayat elections when the accident occurred.

The last rites of Ajit Pawar were conducted with full state honors at the Vidya Pratishthan ground in Baramati on January 29. During the ceremony, his sons lit the funeral pyre and performed the final rituals.

In light of this loss, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken over the Planning and Finance portfolios, which were previously managed by Ajit Pawar.

Additionally, Sunetra Pawar was similarly elected as the Leader of the NCP Legislative Party, consolidating her position within the party’s leadership structure. She is notable for her commitment to sustainable development, environmental conservation, and rural empowerment.

Sunetra Pawar serves as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha and has become a prominent figure behind various initiatives aimed at promoting inclusive and sustainable progress. In 2010, she established the Environmental Forum of India (EFOI), a non-governmental organization dedicated to enhancing environmental awareness and fostering eco-conscious communities across the nation.

Her advocacy work has included leading extensive grassroots campaigns that focus on critical issues such as biodiversity conservation, the protection of endangered species, water resource management, and strategies for drought mitigation. Through her efforts, Pawar has positioned herself as a significant force in the field of environmental and social advocacy.
