M.A. Baby of CPM Warns that Congress’s Solo Run in West Bengal Elections May Harm its Prospects Against BJP and TMC.

The CSR Journal Magazine

M.A. Baby, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), expressed concern regarding the Congress party’s decision to contest the West Bengal assembly elections without forming an alliance with the Left. He stated that such a choice could lead to significant disadvantages for Congress, urging its leaders to assess the potential for collaboration with the Left to better combat the influence of the BJP and RSS. This follows a joint campaign conducted by the Congress and the Left Front during the last state elections in 2021.

Left Front Optimistic Despite Past Decline

The CPM has seen a decline in its influence within West Bengal but remains hopeful about improving its electoral prospects. This optimism is bolstered by the participation of CPI(ML) Liberation alongside the Left and the anticipated support from smaller Left factions. Baby expressed that the united front would stand a stronger chance in the elections.

CPM Calls for a Unified Vote Against TMC and BJP

The CPM politburo encouraged voters in West Bengal to reject what it described as the authoritarian governance of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the communal policies of the BJP by supporting the Left Front. In a recent statement, the party emphasized the importance of collective action to secure a defeat of these governing bodies.

Electoral Strategy and Candidate Selection for Kerala

During a briefing after the CPM politburo meeting, Baby outlined plans for alliances with members of the INDIA bloc in various states to challenge the BJP’s hold. The leadership also reviewed preparations for upcoming elections in Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry. In Kerala, where the CPM leads the government, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will spearhead the election campaign. The finalization of candidate listings is expected by the first week of March.

CPM Highlights Kerala’s Achievements Amid Central Opposition

The CPM stated that, despite facing pressure from the BJP-led central government, the LDF government in Kerala has performed admirably by working to eliminate extreme poverty, improve healthcare and education, and protect workers’ rights while ensuring a steady supply of essential goods. The Left party accused the Congress-led UDF of mobilizing significant financial resources and sectarian support, alleging that it plays a divisive role in both the Assembly and the public sphere by collaborating with the BJP.

Concerns Over Assam’s Political Landscape

With the elections in Assam approaching, the CPM raised alarms over the BJP’s seemingly communal and divisive campaigning strategy. Emphasizing the need for unity among opposition parties, it urged Congress to play a pivotal role in ensuring that anti-BJP votes are consolidated to prevent the party from gaining an upper hand in the state’s electoral dynamics.
