LPG Shortage Disrupts Shimla’s Tourism Sector Amid Middle East Crisis

The CSR Journal Magazine

Shimla, located in Himachal Pradesh, is currently facing a severe shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is disrupting the city’s bustling tourism industry. Hotels are being compelled to cancel wedding functions and large gatherings due to the supply constraints. The shortage is attributed to the ongoing crisis in West Asia, particularly affecting gas availability throughout various parts of India. Local industry leaders emphasize that if the situation does not improve soon, it might threaten the livelihoods of workers and negatively impact the economy of the state capital.

Impact on Hotel Operations

Representatives from the hotel and tourism sectors have indicated that the gas shortage has worsened as a result of the turmoil in regions like Iran and the broader Middle East. Mohinder Seth, the President of the Shimla Hotel and Tourism Stakeholders Association, stated that hotels are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain basic kitchen operations. “Several hotels have already begun to cancel wedding events and large parties because commercial LPG is unavailable. We have appealed to the authorities for at least a rationed supply of cylinders to ensure we can serve essential meals to guests and staff,” he said.

Search for Solutions and Alternate Fuel Sources

Seth further mentioned that the association has contacted government officials to seek immediate assistance and proposed a rationing plan for gas cylinders based on the capacity of each hotel. To mitigate the impact of the shortage, most hotels have resorted to operating with reduced menus to lower gas consumption. “We are willing to collaborate with the government, but it is crucial to guarantee a basic fuel supply for both our employees and guests,” he added.

Challenges Faced by Small Eateries

Hotel owners are also considering alternative cooking methods such as electric stoves and eco-friendly fuel, although transitioning to these solutions requires time and infrastructure changes. Local dhaba owner Pasanda Sharma reported that the limited supply has forced his establishment to reduce its menu offerings. “Our entire kitchen relies on gas. Without a supply, we cannot prepare meals. We have one cylinder remaining, and once it is depleted, we will need to cease operations. We urge the government to provide at least two to three cylinders monthly to keep us running,” Sharma stated. He noted that many local eateries have already halted the preparation of specific items, including tea and breakfast dishes, to conserve gas.

Workers Face Economic Uncertainty

The LPG shortfall not only impacts hotel services but also threatens the livelihoods of workers and small dhaba operators in Shimla. Chef Yoginder Pal, who works at a local dhaba, expressed concerns over the business’s future. “We are experiencing significant challenges due to the halt in gas supply. There are four to five people employed here, and our family’s sustenance relies on this dhaba. If gas does not arrive, we may have to leave,” Pal said. With only a few cylinders available, local establishments may soon be forced to close if fresh supplies do not materialize.

Call for Government Intervention

Industry stakeholders have urged the state government to implement temporary rationing of LPG cylinders for hotels, restaurants, and dhabas until the gas supply is normalized. They warn that continued shortages could have detrimental effects on tourism and employment opportunities in Shimla, a region heavily reliant on its tourism sector.
