Divanshu Kumar is an engineer whose innovations are focused on alleviating the dangers associated with sewage cleaning. As a student at IIT Madras, his interest in engineering was magnified during a project centred around septic-tank cleaning. This initiative highlighted a significant issue that technology could address: the sanitation workforce’s exposure to hazardous environments. Kumar, originally from Gaya, Bihar, pursued a Mechanical Engineering degree from 2014 to 2019, later earning a master’s in Product Design.

Kumar’s project on septic-tank cleaning not only marked a pivotal moment in his academic journey but also laid the groundwork for his future entrepreneurial endeavours. His achievements gained further recognition when he was included in the Forbes India 30 Under 30 list in 2025, a testament to his contributions to innovation.

Acknowledgements and Project Development

Kumar’s project transcended academic walls and received national recognition. His work on the HomoSEP robot won the prestigious Bhagyalakshmi and Krishna Ayengar Prize for the best master’s project in sanitation at IIT Madras. The award was presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, signifying the importance of his work. This accolade encouraged Kumar and his team to explore practical applications for their invention beyond the confines of the laboratory.

This pivotal moment led to the founding of Solinas Integrity, an IIT Madras-incubated startup that Kumar co-founded and now oversees as CEO. The company aims to address issues related to hazardous water and sanitation through the use of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI).

The HomoSEP robot, designed to clean septic tanks and manholes, employs a rotary blade mechanism to break down solid waste and an integrated suction system to remove the resulting slurry. Notably, the machine allows sanitation workers to operate it without entering dangerous spaces, prioritising safety in its design.

Expansion of Projects and Innovations

Solinas Integrity has broadened its scope beyond just septic tank cleaning. The startup has also developed the Endobot, which inspects water and sewer pipelines, catering to narrow passages. In addition, Solinas has introduced an AI-driven data management service called Swasth AI. This indicates a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing less visible yet crucial infrastructure needs.

The company has transitioned from prototype development to field deployment, with plans to roll out multiple HomoSEP units in collaboration with sanitation workers and self-help groups affected by manual cleaning practices. The startup has successfully attracted investment and is engaged with various government bodies, civic organisations, and private stakeholders.

Reports indicate that Solinas Integrity has raised $5 million in funding, with a revenue target of Rs 15 crore for the financial year 2025. Kumar’s initiatives are not only recognised for their technological advancements but also for their positive social impact.

Entrepreneurial Beginnings and Future Goals

Interestingly, Kumar’s entrepreneurial journey began before Solinas Integrity. In his second year at IIT Madras, he co-founded Involve, a social enterprise centred on enhancing peer learning in schools. This initiative focused on fostering agency through peer mentorship, showcasing his commitment to education and community empowerment.

Kumar’s ventures highlight a consistent theme: the integration of technology and entrepreneurship to address pressing social issues. His experience exemplifies how a college project can evolve into a viable enterprise that tackles challenges such as unsafe working conditions in sanitation.

The trajectory of his career suggests that engineering concepts can transcend academic environments, transforming into practical solutions that significantly improve human welfare. Kumar’s ongoing work and future aspirations indicate a dedication to developing technologies that seek to protect and enhance public health and safety.
