Lakhpati Didi Initiative Empowers Rural Women in Uttar Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Lakhpati Didi initiative aims to empower rural women by providing them with the means to achieve economic independence. It focuses on establishing reliable sources of income that open doors to entrepreneurship, improve household financial security, and enhance their decision-making roles within the economy. This initiative is integrated into the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), administered by the Ministry of Rural Development in collaboration with state governments.

Targeting women affiliated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs), this programme seeks to boost their economic activities, facilitating their journeys towards financial stability. The initiative recognises the importance of creating sustainable income streams that would last over time, rather than temporary financial gains.

Criteria for Becoming a Lakhpati Didi

A woman is designated as a Lakhpati Didi if her household earns a minimum of Rs 1 lakh annually through consistent and sustainable means. This income must be evaluated over at least four agricultural seasons or business cycles, ensuring that the earnings are stable rather than sporadic. The initiative encourages various economic activities such as agriculture, allied sectors, non-farm enterprises, and services, depending on the resources and skills available in the local context.

The significant emphasis on income continuity underscores the initiative’s objective of establishing robust economic activities that can yield dependable revenue. This approach is crucial for the long-term financial empowerment of rural households, while ensuring that women can confidently engage in economic pursuits.

Building Sustainable Livelihoods

The Lakhpati Didi initiative incorporates a multifaceted support structure, combining skill development, financial inclusion, access to credit, and market opportunities. These elements are designed to assist women in identifying viable business prospects, augmenting existing ventures, and uncovering additional avenues for income generation.

Access to financial services enables investments in livelihood activities, while skill development enhances women’s capabilities in managing and growing their enterprises. Establishing market links widens their reach, allowing them to sell products and services beyond their local environments. The initiative’s broader strategy seeks to diminish dependency on singular income sources by encouraging diversified livelihoods, ultimately aiming for financial resilience among households.

Implementation in Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, the Lakhpati Didi initiative is brought to life through the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM). Operating under the Department of Rural Development, this mission strengthens women’s Self-Help Groups while promoting livelihood-based activities throughout rural areas. The initiative focuses on enabling women to augment their income-generating capabilities, access crucial financial resources, and develop enduring sources of household income.

By integrating livelihood development with entrepreneurship, the programme provides existing economic pursuits with a platform for growth while also exploring new opportunities. The SHGs act as a foundation for this framework, granting women access to supportive community structures that facilitate their involvement in livelihood initiatives. This alignment with broader objectives enhances women’s economic participation through rural livelihoods.

Evaluating Impact and Sustainable Income

As of June 30, 2025, the Ministry of Rural Development reported that approximately 11,15,982 women in Uttar Pradesh had achieved the status of Lakhpati Didis. However, this figure is self-reported and should not be interpreted as an independently verified count. While it provides insight into the initiative’s reach within the state, it does not fully capture the sustainability of income improvements for individual households.

For a comprehensive assessment of the initiative’s impact, metrics such as income stability, the expansion of women-led enterprises, and ongoing access to credit and markets are essential. The Lakhpati Didi initiative continues to focus on fostering sustainable household income and enhancing the economic roles of women, aiming to bring about lasting changes in rural community dynamics.
