Over 5.72 Lakh Households Opt for Self-Enumeration as Census 2027 Progresses

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India has reported that over 5.72 lakh households have utilised the self-enumeration feature for Census 2027, indicating a rise in participation for the digital census initiative in the country. This announcement was made via a social media post, highlighting the increasing number of families engaging in the online submission of their details.

The digital self-enumeration method is promoted as a quicker, more efficient, and user-friendly way for citizens to contribute to the national census. This initiative marks India’s first-ever digital census, allowing families to directly provide their information through an official online platform.

The current phase of self-enumeration is part of the Houselisting and Housing Census, which is currently underway in select states and Union Territories. Citizens in these areas are encouraged to access the official portal to complete the self-enumeration process.

Census 2027 Structure and Details

Census 2027 is set to be the 16th national census and the eighth since India gained Independence. This census will unfold in two phases. Phase I, which focuses on Houselisting and Housing Census, will last for 30 days across various states and Union Territories between April and September 2026, preceded by a 15-day self-enumeration window.

During Phase I, essential information will be collected regarding the conditions of houses, amenities accessible to households, and assets owned by families. The specific questions to be included in this phase were announced in January 2026, setting a clear framework for data collection.

Phase II, designated for Population Enumeration, is scheduled for February 2027, with certain areas such as the Union Territory of Ladakh and snow-affected regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh following a different timetable, revisiting in September 2027. The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs has approved the inclusion of caste enumeration during this stage.

State-wise Census Schedule Announced

The government has outlined a state-wise schedule for the Houselisting and Housing Census. For instance, regions including Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Delhi, Goa, Karnataka, and others will conduct the Houselisting Census from April 16 to May 15, with a self-enumeration period from April 1 to 15.

Similarly, states such as Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Chandigarh will initiate their Houselisting Census from May 1 to 30, while their self-enumeration window will run from April 16 to April 30. This structured approach ensures that each area is adequately covered within the designated timeframes.

The government has allocated a budget of Rs 11,718.24 crore for Census 2027, further emphasising the importance of this extensive data-gathering exercise for national planning and development.
