Kota School Faces Backlash Over Alleged Forced Recitation of Islamic Verses by Hindu Students

A video that has gone viral on social media shows Hindu students allegedly being compelled to recite the Islamic “Kalma” (faith declaration) during the morning assembly at Bakhshi Springdales School in Kota. This has ignited a wave of debate and controversy, with some Hindu groups raising strong objections.

Several Hindu organizations have condemned the incident, warning of severe consequences and potential protests if action is not taken against the school’s management. However, the school authorities have denied the claims, asserting that the video is old and has been circulated by “mischievous elements” to stir unrest.

‘Sarva Dharma Prarthana’ Tradition

In response to the controversy, the school director, who is a retired naval officer, defended the practice, stating that for the past three decades, the institution has followed the “Sarva Dharma Prarthana” (prayer for all religions) tradition. According to him, this practice is meant to show respect for all religions, and the recitation includes prayers from multiple faiths. The director also emphasized that his family has a long history of military service, which further reinforces his belief in education transcending religious boundaries.

Protests from Hindu Groups

Despite the explanation, Hindu organizations have voiced their anger, alleging that religious views were being forcefully imposed on students of different faiths. They have demanded immediate action from the authorities and warned of large-scale protests if no response is forthcoming.

Official Response and Ongoing Investigation

The District Education Officer, Krishna Kumar Sharma, confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway. He stated, “Upon receiving the video, we immediately formed an inquiry committee. We are in the process of gathering facts, and once the investigation is complete, appropriate actions will be taken as per the guidelines. Since the school is CBSE-affiliated, the report will also be forwarded to the board for further review.”

The controversy has highlighted ongoing tensions around religious practices in educational institutions, prompting calls for greater clarity on the issue.
