“Took me to Men’s Toilet”: Korean Tourist Molested by Air India Airport Staff at Bengaluru Airport

The CSR Journal Magazine

A South Korean tourist has accused a ground staff member at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport of sexually assaulting her under the pretext of a security check. The incident occurred on January 19 after the woman completed her immigration formalities and was heading towards the terminal to board a flight to South Korea.

Accused Used False Pretext

According to the police complaint, the accused, identified as Mohammed Affan (also referred to as Afan Ahmed), approached the woman claiming there was an issue with her check-in baggage, alleging it had produced a “beeping sound” during screening. He warned her that returning to the regular security counter could delay her flight and insisted on conducting a separate personal check.

Alleged Assault Near Men’s Washroom

The staffer allegedly took the tourist near a men’s washroom and asked her to stand in a “T” position, claiming it was part of the security process. The woman alleged that he touched her chest and private parts repeatedly and hugged her from behind despite her objections. When she resisted, he reportedly said “thank you” and walked away.

Swift Action by Authorities

Distressed, the woman immediately alerted airport security. The accused was detained and handed over to the police within minutes. CCTV footage reportedly corroborated the complaint, following which a case was registered and the accused was arrested. Further investigation is ongoing.

Affan was employed by Air India SATS (AISATS), a ground handling and cargo services provider. The company termed the incident “unpardonable,” confirmed his immediate termination, and stated it was cooperating fully with authorities while reviewing safeguards to prevent recurrence.

Affan worked for Air India SATS, which provides ground and cargo services at airports. Air India SATS described the incident as “unpardonable” and said it had sacked Affan. “An unpardonable incident was reported at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. The employee involved was immediately terminated and handed over to the authorities for further legal action. We deeply regret the emotional distress caused by the incident and have extended all necessary support to the guest. A comprehensive inquiry is underway to strengthen safeguards and prevent any recurrence. AISATS is fully cooperating with the authorities and remains committed to the highest standards of ethics, safety, and compliance,” it said in a statement.

Victim Flags Power Imbalance

According to reports, the woman, Kim Sung Kyung, said the incident was traumatic but should not be seen as a reflection of India’s safety. However, she highlighted the “power imbalance” at airports and stressed the need for clearer procedures and stronger protections for passengers, especially women.
