Kolkata Women “Reclaim the Night” One Year After RG Kar Junior Doctor Rape-Murder Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, women in Kolkata are preparing to commemorate the first anniversary of the “Reclaim the Night” movement. This year’s demonstrations will take place at two of the city’s busiest public spaces: Jadavpur and Rabindra Sadan.

From Protest to Celebration

The “Reclaim the Night” movement began a year ago, sparked by the widespread outrage following the rape and murder of a postgraduate medical trainee at RG Kar Medical College. A social media post quickly evolved into a city-wide vigil, attracting thousands of protestors who demanded justice and condemned the prevalent culture of victim-blaming.

This year, the movement’s focus has shifted. According to Satabdi Das, a gender activist and organizer of the gathering at Ranu Chhaya Mancha, the new focus is on celebrating courage. “Last year, we protested against the culture of victim-blaming. This year, we return to the streets to celebrate the courage of women, trans, and queer people,” she said.

The Movement’s Growth and New Goals

The original call to action came from social science researcher Rimjhim Sinha, who will be joining the demonstration in Jadavpur. “The horrific crime at RG Kar was a trigger, but the movement has grown beyond street protests,” Sinha explained. She noted that women are now advocating for structured reforms, such as self-defense workshops and gender-studies in schools.

Overnight vigils, featuring songs, skits, and other expressions of solidarity, are scheduled to begin on Thursday evening and continue until Friday morning. The events are expected to see significant participation from the trans and queer communities, reflecting the broad support the movement received last year.
